The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lamented the effect of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities on students and tertiary education in the country.

ASUU on February 14 began the strike due to what it described as “failure” on the part of the government to meet its demands.

The demands include the payment of earned allowances, payment of revitalisation funds to universities, creation of visitation panels and implementation of the University Transparency Accountability Solution instead of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System for the payment of workers in the ivory towers.

The government set up a committee headed by Prof Nimi Briggs to look into the demands of the union and review the 2009 ASUU-FG agreement.

ASUU leaders, who walked out of a meeting with the government on August 16, alleged that no offer was made to them.

The PUNCH reports on August 30, 2023, that ASUU declared a total and indefinite strike. The decision was taken at a meeting of the union’s National Executive Council held on Sunday in Abuja. Reacting to the ongoing strike in a tweet on his Twitter handle on Wednesday, the LP presidential candidate said universities have been closed for six months.

He lamented what he described as a ‘staggering corruption’ level in Nigeria, adding that the country has also been polarised along religious and ethnic lines.

He wrote, “Nigeria is vastly polarized and wracked by deep divisions along religious, ethnic and regional lines. There is a staggering level of corruption. Our universities have remained closed for six months.

“While our healthcare system remains almost moribund, power generation and distribution are also at an all-time low.

“Our position is that ASUU strike has lingered for far too long. It is unconscionable, worrisome and unacceptable that FGN would allow such an industrial action to become almost intractable to the detriment of our students.

“It’s time for FGN to engage in collaborative negotiations with ASUU, and in good faith. -PO”

Same Obi that AWKA
MEDICAL and Dental practitioners waded into the 13 –month strike during his administration as a Governor has the audacity to talk. Are all politicians not the same? Wonders will never cease, so they say. Back to ASUU:
The standard of education is poor in public institutions. You don't get any value for the money you being paid. The lecturers don't care about lecturing. They sell handouts, collect dues and that's about it. In my school for instance, a lecturer might not show up in the class for the entire semester, that doesn't mean he won't set questions at the end of the semester. It's on you as a student to make sure you read the ridiculous lecture materials and pass the exams. Passing the exams can be through luck, hardwork, or sorting the lecturer -in-charge. It is what it is, but that's the truth. The decadence in the system is beyond words. I could spend the entire day, highlighting the faults in public institutions.
But there is a catch to all of that; despite all the odds, if an individual should graduate with a second class upper in my school, without paying for grades, he's bound to excel anywhere in life, same applicable to other institution graduates.

Federal and state government should start investing in Agriculture and solid mineral sectors.

Apart from Niger Delta Crude Oil Money, Revenue will be generated from other sectors to fund education.

The federal, state band local government in Nigeria should cut down on the high cost of governance.

I think GEJ was once a lecturer and we can't forget so quickly how his administration handled the education sector.

So that you're aware! grin

The clown has started again. Has he forgotten the 13-month doctors strike in his tenure? Doctors called off strike on humanitarian grounds to stop deaths by sick people. This is the man talking about ASUU strike? Hypocrisy of the highest order. Very soon everyone will see that this man is a liar.

When you want to destroy a country, the only thing you should do is just to destroy the educational system.

Year 2022 in Nigeria is for FG & ASUU whilst other countries keep commissioning laudable project that bring forth development to their nation

Nigeria I hail thee

In as much as the strike is taking too long, I support ASUU and I will always support them...

How will you owe them alot of money amount to that and expect them to keep mute, they have families to feed.... majority of nairalander supporting FG will never take that.

FG can't owe any of the house rep, senator or ministers, very soon you will discovered that the recovered looted fund have been vanished into thin air...

E no go better for FG
