Why Is London Burning? by wizup(m): 8:10pm On Aug 09, 2011
I think the question is: Why is London Burning?, Is it because a man was shot? Is it because of government cuts? Is it because of tuition fee increments? Is it because youth centres are getting shut down? Is it because parents and teachers have been stripped of their disciplinarian powers? OR Is it because kids are eager to commit crime?

Holistic answers to these questions would potentially set a clear path to a sustainable solution.

Is it simply the case of 'spare the Rod and spoil the Child' at least that,s what the bible says.

WHY DO YOU THINK LONDON'S BURNING?

@r231, read my post well and understand. The issues are complex and closely knitted. If we don't diagnose the symptoms the illness will remain.

WHY DO YOU THINK LONDON'S BURNING?
Re: Why Is London Burning? by whobemumu(m): 9:01pm On Aug 09, 2011
it is not because a man was killed

nobody knows why , some of the rioters are just plain  looters .

but there are many factors and some of them are the perceived oppression of the government policies
Re: Why Is London Burning? by Shersky: 9:01pm On Aug 09, 2011
London is burning because some Londoners set some parts of it on fire. Let it burn jo. Awon Akebaje oshi! cheesy

WHY DO YOU THINK LONDON'S BURNING?
BECAUSE SOME NUTTERS HAVE TO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS TO WASTE AND PEOPLE TOO DEY LIKE AWOOF. SIMPLE! Imagine a looter posting a pix of his loot? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2023667/London-riots-Looter-posts-photo-booty-Facebook.html

If it was cos of the man that was killed, how about the rioting in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester etc? People have suggested the cuts as a reason but i dont think it is. Some folk have laimed the areas are being neglected by the government and apparently, about 200 of the marched up to Scotland Yard but no one listened to them, not even a single news report. Don't know how true this is but its not reason enough to burn people's means of survival (lots of family businesses ruined) in addition to branches of big stores.

The other questions you asked contain clues to factors that might have a hand in all these, but people's blood de boil so de don they look for any reason, no matter how ridiculous to wreck havoc.

WHY DO YOU THINK LONDON'S BURNING?

the populace are fed up.
no jobs for the youths, their jobseeker's allowances have been sliced.

these people have been silent for years with the government streaming out different policies that affect their lives hugely and the same mps have been found guilty of embezzling funds here n there.

the pent-up anger piled up and the moment a little opportunity availed itself(duggan's death), these yobs took advantage of the situation and have been on rampage since then. the youths think they have no future with all the cuts, taxes plus the high unemployment rate.

Re: Why Is London Burning? by deenee: 9:23pm On Aug 09, 2011
HERE IS THE ANSWER!

Procrustes, in Greek mythology, was the cruel owner of a small estate in Corydalus in Attica on the way between Athens and Eleusis, where the mystery rites were performed. Procrustes had a peculiar sense of hospitality; he abducted travelers, provided them with a generous dinner, then invited them to spend the night in a rather special bed. He wanted the bed to fit the traveler to perfection. Those who were too tall had their legs chopped off with a sharp hatchet; those who were too short were stretched (his name was said to be Damastes, or Polypemon, but he was nicknamed Procrustes, which meant "the stretcher"wink.

In the purest of poetic justice, Procrustes was hoisted by his own petard. One of the travelers happened to be the fearless Theseus who slayed the Minotaur later on in his heroic career. After the customary dinner, Theseus made Procrustes lie in his own bed. Then, to make him fit in it to the customary perfection, he decapitated him.

Theseus thus followed Hercules' method of paying back in kind.In more sinister versions (such as the one in Pseudo-Apollodorus' Bibliotheca), Procrustes owned two beds, one small, one large; he made short victims lie in the large bed, and the tall victims in the short one.

Every situation that  life throws at us, is an aphorism of some sort and can be  likened to the 'The Bed of Procrustes' .We humans, facing limits of knowledge, and things we do not observe, the unseen and the unknown, resolve the tension by squeezing life and the world into crisp commoditized ideas, reductive categories, specific vocabularies, and prepackaged narratives, which, on the occasion, has explosive consequences. Further, we seem unaware of this backward fitting, much like tailors who take great pride in delivering the perfectly fitting suit —but do so by surgically altering the limbs of their customers.

nah, the conservatives cost this.
it was bad enough after the economic recession of 08-09, the tories then sliced deeper into the take-home pay of struggling families. while i don't condone the senseless riots, david cameron and his group of zombies should go back to the drawing board and reduce these cuts. they did not promise all these when campaigning for the general elections last may. . . . .britons feel betrayed as it is.

Re: Why Is London Burning? by EuroMeko(m): 9:33pm On Aug 09, 2011
My question is, when will Nigeria burn? When will enough be enough? When will the youths do what it takes?

Oh wait we're still infighting about tribes, etc.

Carry on.

I pray and hope that Nigeria would never burn but Gd would grant us a way out of the mess we find ourselves in without any blood bath.Amen

Let the conservative be deceiving themselves and arresting all youths. True its looting, true its criminal, but also true is that there is ANGER in the middle class. When this one stops, another will be around very soon.
NottingHill carnival year yi ma yato. They better import police from Nigeria becos the ones here cant cope on that day!
BTW I think the Libyan Government should recognise the looters as the legitimate government in UK

I share your prayers but there is no such thing as a peaceful revolution. even Ghandi and MLK couldn't get it done.

I say this is bull shit. angry angry We have enough trouble facing us in Nigeria. I cant stay here commenting on this issue. If London Burns, let it burn to blazes. Thought they said they were more developed than Nigeria. Let them handle their problem in the developed way.

People no get joy,so they capitalize on the police killing to vent their anger.Meanwhile, they should have make it political to protest the british monarchy instead of looting.

Come on!!! This must happen in Nigeria, waiting too long now. All the government must die!!!
Re: Why Is London Burning? by PROUDIGBO(m): 9:52pm On Aug 09, 2011
Simple really. The answer is the break down of the family unit; kids having kids and parents not caring to bring up their kids with those age-old values that'll see them through life as positive members of society.

You know if i had gone out as a kid till late in the morning when all this rioting/looting was going on, i'd not live to see another day when i finally got home.

Imagine kids as young as 7 to 15 staying out late. It begs the question- do they have parents/guardians at all shocked?

there are about 2 million nigerians in london. some of them would be related to you directly or indirectly. . . .should one of them die a sudden death, you will scream like a rhesus monkey with grief in your voice. that a country is developed does not mean there cannot be a bedlam there.

@ola_pluto lol. The looters are the legitimate government in uk.
Re: Why Is London Burning? by pelezico: 10:01pm On Aug 09, 2011
This has nothing to do with a Mr Duggan being was  shot (afteral you live by the sword you die by the sword) - i know his friends - if you know anything about the youth here in the UK  you will know that they are not rioting because of some ideal but because it allows them to do what they have wanted to do.  They are purposely targeting shops like JD sports, Carphone Warehouse, Footlocker, Debenhams

I live in London and youth here take the absolute liberties.  The crime system here is a complete joke and government has created a nanny state where offenders get off lightly and the victim is victimized thru the garbage called Human Rights.

The youth are a product of englands morale decline and bear the fruits of what has been sown for the last 3 decades.  Black families are crumbling and the only place were you find families doing well in London and those who attend church regularly who understand the necessity of raising their children with a Christian world view.

Incidently i will add that the Indians (not so much as Pakistanis)are also relatively doing well because their families are eager to have them embrace the language and customs.  Though even among that race people things are changing.

From single parenting, abortion, relativism, government interference in parental responsibilities, fathers abdicating the highly important role they have in raising children, from anti-family groups trying to rewrite what family is, from the lobbying of gays and lesbians trying to rewrite legislatively what family is, pornography addiction, church folks not willing to be light and salt, music, tv etc etc has all helped to create this problem.

This problem has been cooking for years so please lets not confuse this with REAL problems in countries where there is REAL government TYRANNY.  This kids simply need some love with a good whooping the kind Nigerian fathers use to administer back when.

And now you got folks here talking about reprisals against the youth buying weapons to use against them

Oh well welcome to England
