Nigeria to Import Fuel from Niger Republic

By Ahamefula Ogbu

10 Aug 2011

Government of Niger Republic would begin exportation of refined petroleum products to Nigeria by the end of this year, the country’s leader, President Mahamadou Issoufou, has said.

Speaking Tuesday at the State House, Abuja, Issoufou explained that the planned export of products to Nigeria would be aimed at bringing succour to residents of Northern Nigeria, whom he said would be getting supplies of the products from Zinder Refinery in Niger Republic.

The Nigerien president was in the country to hold bilateral discussions with President Goodluck Jonathan on matters of common security especially trans-border crimes, which have negatively impacted on the sub-region.

Speaking earlier, President Jonathan told the Nigerien leader that Nigeria was prepared to cooperate with her neighbours to tighten security and to check crime and terrorism.
He said: “Terrorism and trans-border crimes pose a serious security threat to all our countries. So, we will strengthen border patrols and other areas of cooperation with our neighbours to ensure the safety of our citizens.”
On food security, Jonathan said Nigeria had plans to exploit its gas resources to further agricultural activities through production of power and fertiliser that would best suit the soil of the sub region.

Jonathan assured Issoufou that Niger Republic would be readmitted into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the community’s next summit. He also said the readmission of the country had become imperative in the light of the “full democracy” that had been restored in Niger Republic.

He warned against reported attempts at unconstitutional change of government, which he said would not be tolerated.
Jonathan assured his Nigerien counterpart that he would work with the country in the areas of power, agriculture, rail transport and water supply and re-invigoration of the Nigeria- Niger Joint Commission.

Responding, Issoufou said he was equally worried by the proliferation of small arms in the region and expressed fears of security challenge.
He said he was looking forward to agreements between Nigeria and Niger on how to achieve results in the listed areas of cooperation and called for immediate joint patrols between both countries.

He expressed gratitude to Nigeria over her role in the restoration of democratic rule in his country and assured Jonathan of Niger’s cooperation in the attainment of the joint goal of common security.

This is really shameful for our nation. Is somebody telling me that our refineries are still not working despite the unending Turn Around Maintenance that has gulped billions of dollars?

U said it all. Niger republic can't build a functional refinery to supply Nigeria fuel after satisfying their domestic need and u will tell me that nigeria cannot.

The fact is that 1 of the leaders in Nigeria built that refinery, take our crude there and import the fuel back,  What they have only succeeded in doing is to ease the unemployment situation in Niger republic while overlooking that of nigeria. its a shame, all the the name of personal interest.

This is greed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

It is getting closer to home and someday somehow, w'll get there.
Re: Nigeria To Import Fuel From Niger Republic by dustydee: 1:20pm On Aug 10, 2011
Is there anything wrong with importing from Niger? We import petroleum products and importing from Niger IMHO will be cheaper than importing from Ivory Coast cos of the distance.

last time i checked, some of the worlds most prolific oil reserves are in "desert" regions of the world.

So you think that the importation of refined fuel that has been going on for decades can be stopped by magic? Abi you tink se petroleum minister office de Okija?
Rubbish.

Please peeps, lets apply some common sense. Yes, importing fuel doesn't tell well on the country, but thats not to say we should allow our intelligence decrease. What we should be doing is finding out if measures are being put in place to halt the embarrassing practice, and if not, we can take to the streets, facebook, twitter or whatever. But to shout senselessly only casts us not too smart.

Soutjern nigeria is dragging nigeria back my nothern peeps its time to wakeup and breakup, oil in yobe, niger, potentially in katsina and sokoto, not to talk about gas grin cheesy grin cheesy grin
Re: Nigeria To Import Fuel From Niger Republic by Nobody: 4:08pm On Aug 10, 2011
Peeps, this is a simple thing, the reason why we are not refining enough petroleum products to meet our needs is that powerful interests, through the NNPC and the oil marketers are milking the country dry through the subsidy that is paid on imported petroleum products. That is the reason why Nigeria is the only OPEC member that imports fuel. Until we get rid of this subsidy, government will never be serious about building more refineries. The solution lies in having committed and selfless leaders who will put national interest first. If we don't get such leaders, we might wake up tomorrow to hear that we are now importing from Chad and Cameroon.

This is really shameful.
Re: Nigeria To Import Fuel From Niger Republic by Nobody: 5:38pm On Aug 10, 2011
When our refineries were privatized, Nigerians cried foul and said the government should seize it back and run it. Now they have it back and can't run it. We are now seeing that powerful interests including the NNPC , Nupeng / Pengassan, fuel marketers are having a field from the NNPC top shots demanding multimillion dollar bribes to allocate products to Nupeng / Pengassan fighting for their inept and corrupt members to petroleum product marketers buying products at 'subsidized' rates and and hoarding for insane profiteering. Nigeria is at the mercy of these corrupt interests.

Sadly, Nigerians themselves vote against their own best interests by insisting the government continues to be involved in the fuel business with its attendant inefficiency, corruption and gross incompetence. Imagine if the government was involved in selling rice or bread? We would have the exact same problems we are having now. Only deregulation would attract serious private companies to build and run their own refineries. Otherwise the status quo will continue.
Re: Nigeria To Import Fuel From Niger Republic by IG: 7:28pm On Aug 10, 2011
I'm surprised that many people do not know that Niger has been an oil producer for some time now. They specifically built a refinery with a capacity above their national demand. This is so that they can sell the excess to Nigeria. For those that do not know, Chad is also an oil producer and they are also building a refinery. With Ghana also having oil, I think it's time we stop feeling special. By the way both Chad and Niger are only a few kilometers away which makes importation from them more cost effective than from far away countries.fective than from far away countries.
