I Just Quit ALX Programme by chukwuebuka65(m): 2:51pm On Sep 07, 2022 |
Yes, I decided to quit the programme because : 1. The program doesn’t give adequate time to go through the resources and complete the project. 2.being that I am working , if I give ALX the maximum amount of time it requires it will affect my work. 3.. the resources provided are not adequate . You will have to do a lot of googling to successfully complete the project. 4. I still have to attend to my pet projects in order to build my portfolio. And if I don’t give enough time for ALX , I will eventually drop out. I just decided to respect my self and stick to learning at my own pace that has brought me this far. I don’t know why ALX decided to train software engineers in just a year. Most of the students will actually burnout and eventually drop out. They should just make it a two year programme 7 Likes |

chukwuebuka65: All these types of programs are really not that effecient at teaching people things. Take myself for example, I learn things at my own pace, once I'm learning something and I'm stuck, I move on to another section or topic, sometimes I'll even give myself a break for over a day before I continue, that's (in my opinion) the best way to learn. Not this ALX robot type way of learning 6 Likes |

OP, The reasons you gave aren't very valid. It kind of indicates that you aren't passionate enough to break through the normal obstacles that come with learning while working. Fast-paced work environments like is often seen in Software Engineering require grit, determination and top notch time management skills (there are always deadlines in life). And it comes across like you are struggling with those traits. Trust me, 90% of Software Engineers have "googling" as one of the key soft skills. While I understand that it can be a very difficult balancing act, it's something that can be done if you really want to accomplish it. Review your position, plan your time, be disciplined and you can overcome these resistance. Or does the prospect of earning $30 or $50/hr not motivate you enough? Ask around about CFA exam that is required in the Finance industry. It's one of the most brutal exams. And is taken mostly by people working in banking or finance. They have to juggle their time between working and preparing for the exam. And a lot of people succeed at doing that. Is it easy? NO. Is it doable? ABSOLUTELY!! Discipline yourself and plan your time. Nothing good comes easy. I wish you all the best 39 Likes 2 Shares |

All your points are valid. You’re a human after all not a machine. But your no 3 point is a non issue as far as tech is concerned. No course or tutorial or boot camp is ever going to be enough to teach you everything you need to know about a topic. Constant googling has to become a part of you. I’ve noticed that many beginner devs in these parts have a hard time googling mostly because data isn’t readily available all the time. 5 Likes |

airsaylongcome: So I should not have a life because I want to have ALX certificate ?. Or is ALX the only path to becoming a software engineer? So learning at my own pace won’t make me a qualified engineer? So out of about 20k students that about 253 graduated, you mean the other 19k student are dull or don’t have time management skills. There is something ALX is not doing right. 15 Likes |

Hmmm... Me I no even know Wetin to talk sef. Am aware the requirements of the course is absolutely herculean; but I believe that this kind of opportunity don't come twice. Training to become a software engineer is actually a wonderful thing, when u recall the fact that you can do MAGIC that may seem arcane to web developer. Truly, if we re really given to this tech thing, if truly we have the passion, if we really want to make it as far as tech is concerned, then we should be able to surmount whatever challenge that come our way... Like the last person said.."nothing good comes easy". There's a prestige that that title - Software engineer bestow on you. It is even better when truly, you know your onions as a software engineer. Talk about the edge, the preference, the pay, easy aceing of interviews that may seem gross for a web guy. The perks are gigantic... Hence with great power comes great responsibility!!! Where would you even get a curriculum for software engineering? But alx did all the hard stuff by curating an actual curriculum for it. I know certificate doesn't matter in tech, but hey! A certificate attesting that you graduated from HOLBERTON(u can Google it) nd ALX as a software engineer is never a little feat!!! It speaks volumes of your capabilities. Among the perks, u re also added to the ROOM , where you get to connect with top companies very easy. The traditional stress of bombarding job sites with application would be cut off. What's more interesting is the fact that you have advocates that re going to speak for u there, nd the companies already know the caliber of students that re being produced by alx. Interview? Piece of cake!!! (David, one of the graduate was immediately taken by Amazon) I once saw an Ethiopian nursing mother that graduated from the program! In conclusion, What the Op was true, but wat the last person (airslaygon......) Said is truest!!! (If there's anything like that) 12 Likes |

airsaylongcome: Mr passion calm down. He just gave u reasons why he can't continue with ALX it doesn't mean he's not passionate.... it's not just working for him haba. They are other programs which may work for him and at his own time. ALX program isn't yardstick to measure how successful You'll be as a developer. 13 Likes 1 Share |

airsaylongcome: Good submission. The heat in the kitchen is what keeps many out of it. Can't handle it? Leave the kitchen. I went to Google them thinking theirs is something different. You can learn in a year, there are other outfits doing so, BUT the requirement is the time and dedication. Those two things are actually the same when learning. It will probably still be the same complaint with Microverse and anyone else offering 1 year programs. If you tell people to learn for 3 years, they'll tell you it's too long. 1 year is too much going on. 2 years is not enough. Sigh. OP should prepare time. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

chukwuebuka65: For your third point, that isn't an issue in any way, but an advantage as a developer. Even while learning at your own pace l, you do make use of google or YouTube when struck and if you don't, I don't know what to say to you. 1 Like |
Re: I Just Quit ALX Programme by Nobody: 5:42pm On Sep 07, 2022 |
chukwuebuka65: Please, just take it easy & learn at your own pace. You can have two aspiring software engineers in one team, one is picking up fast while the other one could be slow, we are not built the same way. Some learn faster & some learn slower, meanwhile some learn nonsense all in the bid to be fast and deliver or become an engineer. Googling for solutions is not the optimal way to learn. You need to learn the basics from a quality source, then when you know the basics, it is easier for you. That is why i usually recommend Udacity for learners, It is credible. Not just going to Stackoverflow to copy & paste code. 2 Likes |

strictly4data: Lol... Google Metaverse program, they train software engineers for 6months, you have to up and ready from 8am - 6pm I assume. Even if 5 people graduate from Alx, they're human beings, one thing tho about the program is that, it is advisable to do it while you're unemployed. I'm currently on the program, my 4th month actually. It hasn't been easily doing it while working an 8am - 8pm job but this is why ALX advise connecting with your peers. You can always meet them when struck. Op probably didn't have close Colleagues in the program or never went to them when it was difficult. airsaylongcome was right, passion will play a role in keeping you for a long time in the program. 12 Likes 1 Share |

chukwuebuka65: The choice is yours bro. You can decide to sacrifice yourself and your time for a year, to get an opportunity to "have a life" for the rest of your life. There is a line from a song by Lil Kim called Lighters up. The line says "The strong stand and rumble, the weak fold and crumble in the land of struggle..." ALX seems to have a high attrition rate if 95% drop out before the program finishes. Top Tech companies are looking for that 5% that are able to overcome all obstacles to get results. Like I said earlier, I wish you all the best 17 Likes |

Alx na your mate?! airsaylongcome is right. These companies would actually prefer the top few than having tens of thousands with nothin to show. I think that's where desaturation comes into play The more chances they'll have to pick those with the right skills they're looking for. |
Re: I Just Quit ALX Programme by Genesils(m): 8:21pm On Sep 07, 2022 |
Lol ALX is not for busy people. And if you're the type that's naturally competitive, it'll wear you out cos you're expected to be fully dedicated and no matter how fast and efficient you think you're going, you'll always see comments of people that seems they're learning better/faster than you. Just do you man. The beautiful thing about tech is that there's enough free resources for everyone to make it. And you get what you input. 5 Likes |

chukwuebuka65: Personally and people will hate me for this, but ALX is basically hand-holding. Most BootCamp touch surface level, even freeCodeCamp; Documentation, Language Specification doc and books with Youtube works for the best. I did Aptech 4 years and never learnt anything useful. Self-learning has always worked, just read books, study and join some online open education. Even in Andela BootCamp never went that deep, 1 year is not enough to teach core comp sci Gooogle this stuff Open Courseware and OSSu on github all the best. 13 Likes |

qtguru:Thank you for this update. This is why it's good for experienced programmers to always share their experience. I'm currently learning dart on freecodecamp, and surmising from the over-a-day duration of the video. I thought it will be very in-depth and it'll cover all scopes of the program but i was wrong. Despite the tutor claiming to use dart to explain the basics of oop concepts that will turn a complete beginner to a programmer. I, having known oop concepts through java book, notice clearly that the man did not touch all oop basics, and the ones he explained was just brushed over and not profound. |

Re: I Just Quit ALX Programme by ABUPHARM(m): 9:05am On Sep 08, 2022 |
Alx isn't for working class I guess cuz it consumes most of your time, I'm also in my fourth month of the program all thanks to ASUU strike. I felt even worse than the OP at the first two month even after giving it the required 10hrs daily. My advise for anyone opting for Alx Don't try to go or study alone, it's easier having a group where anyone who's stuck can seek help and get solution in no time cuz even with googling there are times you won't get the logic behind a concept but a peer can put you through easily. 5 Likes |
Re: I Just Quit ALX Programme by Tobedated(m): 9:38am On Sep 08, 2022 |
OP the program i'll recommend for you is theodinproject -but you must have determination, there's no hand-holding involved you'll have to google for stuffs they're will themselves give you links to articles to read up if you a stuck with a topic you are free to move to the next one it self-paced so if you're not serious you'll easily drop it its mostly reading although its sometimes ask you to a video on something its project based so you built projects after every lesson everything depends on you make your research on it if it will fit you and on resources it always link to other sources that compliment each lesson there's no time-based exercise so its all up to you check it out and goodluck 4 Likes 1 Share |

Right from the beginning when I saw the programme, I knew I could dedicate 70 hours a week for soft. Eng. One would not do any other thing and you'll have to prepare all the resources, money, food, data etc. Not just my work, but my life would be affected. But, I guess that are other programmes that are not very stringent. |
