IFEWARA: A BRIEF HISTORY

Ifewara is an historical Yorùbá town between Ile-Ife and Ilesa, just about 10miles south-east of Ilé-Ifè. It is the headquarters of Atakunmosa Local Government Area of Osun State.

Yoruba Blog gathered that the town was founded circa 1500AD by migrants from Ile-Ife passing through Ilesa particularly a crown prince called 'Adeniregun' who was expected to ascend the throne of his forefathers after the demise of the then ruler of Ile-Ife, but he was not living in Ife then, he was a farmer in another town believed to be the present location of Ifewara, Adeniregun sent his younger brother called Ogbòru, to the kingmakers of the town to enquire from them on his behalf, the materials that would be needed for his installation.

On getting to the kingmakers, Ogbòru was asked if he himself was not interested in becoming the Oba instead of his elder brother since he was always around, the younger brother was said to have answered in affirmmative, the kingmakers then decided to make the younger brother the Oba, who instantly made available the materials given to him.

When Prince Adeniregun received the news that his own brother had usurped the throne and outsmarted him, he became infuriated and travelled to Ife to contest for his position, he was however defeated as the Chiefs and king makers rallied in support of their new King. The disappointed prince then left Ife in anger along with his supporters, loyalists and sympathisers to settle permanently on the land he had been farming.

Prince Adeniregun then named their new settlement "Ifewara", he and his co-migrants agreed to continue to uphold the beliefs and traditions of their kith and kins in Ilé-Ifè. Like inseparable twins, traditional titles in Ifewara are the same as they exist in Ilé-Ifè. Chieftaincy titles such as Obalufe, Obaloran, Obajio, etc, are still in use in Ifewara and the bearers are highly esteemed in the village. Even the Ifewara Emeses dress like Ilé-Ifè deities.

Pastor E.A Adeboye and Chief Olu Fajemirokun are among the notable people from this town, The RCCG Mount Carmel Prayer village is also located in this town.
