while countries are exporting iPhones, designer items etc you want to export corn.. please export corn to where? USA where Monsanto has patents on corn seeds, China which cultivates every crop in the world in desert waste lands for just research or towu fufu to Japan who cultivate cassava for mad cow disease treatment.... Agbado & cassava is = garri , fufu, corn flakes , cassava bread, starsh, golden moore, , tuwo etc the more Agbado and cassava we produce and be sufficient to the extent of exporting the better for diversification of the economy. Maize production in Nigeria rose to the highest level since the nation’s independence in 1960, a significant improvement for a country that has struggled for decades with below-par domestic production of food.

The production of maize increased by 16 per cent in 2021 over the previous year, according to the United State Department of Agriculture.

The rise came a year after the Central Bank of Nigeria halted government-supplied foreign exchange for the importation of maize, in a bid to cut imports and boost domestic production. The government did not stop importers from sourcing dollars from the black market.

The figure is also coming at a time of growing concerns of global food scarcity as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In 2019, Nigeria was Africa’s second largest maize producer after South Africa and the 14th largest producer globally. Yet, its local maize demand continues to surpass supply thus creating an annual demand gap of about 4 million metric tonnes annually. According to USDA, maize import into Nigeria doubled from 500,000 metric tonnes to 1 million metric tonnes between October 2019 and October 2020.

1. We are the 14th largest producer of corn in Nigeria and we are producing more and more every year and the largest quantity produced today since independence.

2. With increased production, we still have gaps in between that we must close every year with corn importation, meaning we still need to produce more to satisfy local consumption from food to other manufacturing and industrial applications corn products, sugars and syrups, animal feeds and so on.

3. Our animal feeds including the poultry industry are in dire need of corn products, poor supply is one of the reasons why chicken and poultry products are high.

We need to produce more to use locally and export. We are currently exporting corn, we made a quarter of a million dollars from corn export last year, just imagine Nigeria with excess corn for export, especially with the ongoing global food shortage.

4. Rich countries all over the world by design, national food security and FX needs have strong agric produce so why do you think Nigeria being self-sufficient and even earning FX from corn beats me, it's very sad and disheartening coming from our so-called leaders of tomorrow.

5. When we say food is expensive, do you not know that it's mostly because of poor corn supply, no, not just the corn that you roast and eat, but the one poultries and industries depend on.

How do we as a nation put people with your basement and lowly mentality in charge of things in Nigeria?

You really arre a sad disgrace for that ignorant and thoughtless comment.
