The National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, on Thursday, said over 65 per cent of cargo coming into Nigeria through the Lagos port ends up in Onitsha and Aba in the Southeast.

Managing Director of NIWA, Dr George Moghalu, disclosed this when he featured at the 52nd Session of the State House Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team, at the State House, Abuja.

He also said that everything is in place for the movement of Cargo in Onitsha River Port even though he explained that it is the owner of the cargo that will determine the movement.

Moghalu, who was providing updates on the agency’s activities, however noted that the current road network infrastructure cannot withstand the sheer volume of traffic required to move cargo from the southeast to other parts of the country.

This, he said, necessitated recent efforts by NIWA to provide water inroads to the northern part of the country.

He said that water transportation would help to reduce the weight of the heavy duty traffic on the roads and also generate revenue for the country.

He said this necessitated recent efforts by NIWA to provide water inroads to the northern part of the country, including plans to open up Lake Chad....

To put some context here; The Federal allocations that are shared these days are almost hundred percent from import duties! Do your checks. Most of Nigerias Oil incomes are being used to service loans obtained by Buhari to build up Niger republic and co. Essentially, the over maligned importers, who are always derided to no end at every given opportunity, are the ones that keep your states running! Think about that,.. Most of these containers are also shipped in by the same people Buhari taunts for fun from Monday to Sunday. If 65% goes to Onitsha and Aba, imagine the much that goes to Alaba and Trade Fair, Idumota them. Yet, all these are done without any single government support. A nation that bites the fingers that feeds it will always be an epileptic case.

River Niger need to be dredged and as well as Oguta Lake, and Onitsha Port be made functional. Also Port Harcourt and Calabar Port.
This will decongest Apapa and Tincan Port and pressure on the roads.
The economy boosted, you don't need to be an expert to know this. But reason while the Government is nothing doing this is reason Nigeria keep deteriorating.

65% of Container going to South East, with facility to have a functional Port, yet none is exist. And we claim to have a Government. We simply decided not to move forward.

At a point during the Lagos Ports congestion crises months back (before nairas free fall), it will take you almost 2 million naira to transport your 40ft container from Lagos State to Anambra State! That was almost the same amount it will take you to ferry the same container from China to Nigeria! There was no single government attempt to help! Traders bore the brunt without much ado, even as the federal government blamed them for all the evils in the country as if there is any any manufacturing alternatives in the first place. It has now become the favorite pastime of those in government at Abuja to rail against importers as if they're the cause of all Nigerias problems, when importers are only trying to eke out a living by filling a void created by government incompetence.

Yet, these are the people who pay the import duties that are shared every month end to the different States of the federation while providing basic goods that government failed policies have made impossible to be produced hetr. Buhari who's administration depends almost totally on these duties to stay afloat, was busy spending billions on RUGA for fulani herders from different parts of West Africa, who pay no single tax and are responsible for massive capital flight as they truck the dollars they made from their sales here to Niger, Chad, Mali, Guinea and Mauritania at Nigerias expense! Can anyone mention one single federal government project targeted at improving the work of Eastern traders since the inception of this country? Just one!

I tell people that ask why do Igbos complain too much even if we are successful

See Nigeria might not be working for any tribe ...but Igbos are the only tribe Nigeria is intentionally working against ...Nigeria might not be working for you but it's not working against you

While trying to "intentionally work" against the igbos, Nigeria has created a very dogged specie of humans out of these people... Growing up as an Igbo man, knowing that your socalled country will be your biggest obstacle towards achieving your goals in life, prepares you in so many ways to learn how to skillfully confront and dribble evil on your way to success.. The never say never spirit...

The government is evil. They are putting pressure on Benin Lagos and Onitsha Benin roads unnecessarily.

Why can't they build a port in Onitsha? Oh! It's Igbo land. Make Port Harcourt ports functional. No, Igbo will claim and benefit from it. Warri port? It's close to the Igbos. Owena River port? That'll be worse. They don't even invest in my Edo State.

Why are we wicked to ourselves? All the money used in taking those containers to the east will be added to the cost of goods and Nigerians from all tribes pay for it.

God! Why so much hate for people that runs the economy?

Even the only functional distribution company making profit is in igboland.

That's a microcosm of how the people will fare being independent.

This fact has been established since 2017 when the former Hausa head of NPA said the same thing.

It takes a lot of money to bring in goods into Nigeria and if most of them are heading to the east, what does that tell you about Nigerian economy.

Vote for Peter Obi for even development of the country, he would dredge the river Niger from Onitsha to Baro port in Niger state to lake Chad. All the eastern seaports from warrior to port Harcourt to calabar would be rehabilitated to reduce pressure on Lagos ports.

It's high time we spoke to the authorities. The inflation rate in this country is alarming because 75% of the people who carry out visible economic activities (trade) are schemed out of things.

From Okada to Sokoto, Brass to Bama, Seme to Bauchi, physical trade is controlled by Igbos. Taking decisions against them in government equals governing against Nigerians.

What has this government achieved by keeping the Igbos out of affairs? Hunger! Inflation! Japa syndrome! Brain drain!

God I am no longer happy about the scheme of things.

How far have we gone from 1967 to 2022 we've been hearing about how bad the Igbos are.

Yes. They were at the helm of affairs during Jonathan's government. Can any normal human compare Jonathan's administration to what we have now?

I am beginning to believe that the longer we go against some part of the country, we destroy it.

Since everything is centered in Lagos

Is Lagos the only coastal state If dredging onitsha port will be really hard for federal government NPA to initiate

Why not make Delta, Rivers, even Akwa ibom port functional??

Look out how inflation is crippling the economy

Our people need to be even more assertive! We are dealing with ethnic vampires!
The people at Abuja are trying to construct a post oil economy that will depend heavily on the over taxation of Igbo businesses. You an already see that with the unending increase in import duties and sundry tariffs. Tinupoo has already given them a "workable template" with his maximum taxations of Igbo businesses in Lagos which brings in billions every month to sustain the hedonistic owambe lifestyles of his platoon of inebriated ethnic henchmen.

Since the death of Okadigbo and Ojukwu them, erudite Igbo leadership has disappeared, yet we are still dealing with the Buharis, the Obasanjos and the Babangidas. The same set of wayward tribal supremacists that Ojukwu and co dealt with over their overreaching tendencies in trying to subjugate the igbos. Their plan is very predictable; encircle the igbos, contain them and exploit them to no end! That plan will only work if the igbos don't fight back! That's why I don't give a damn about what Kanu and Ekpa do. Let them continue to disturb the evil nation until the greedy groups that want to hyjack the country for their sectional goals are stopped!
