Mr Dipo Ayeni, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, has said that Mr Michael Obi, the father of Nigerian international and Chelsea of England midfielder, Mikel Obi, was missing and “not abducted’’. “Nobody has reported any case of abduction to the police.

The report we have received is that of someone missing,’’ Ayeni told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Tuesday. “The Police Command is gathering relevant information that will give a positive clue about the whereabouts of the old man,” Ayeni added. He said there was no clue yet on the whereabouts of the man, noting that the Police Command was “working hard to ensure that he is found alive, hale and hearty”.

THE Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr Dipo Ayeni, has said Mr Michael Obi, the father of Nigerian international and Chelsea of England midfielder, Mikel Obi, was missing and “not abducted.”

Ayeni told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos, on Tuesday, nobody had reported any case of abduction to the police, adding that the report the command had received was that of someone missing.

“The police command is gathering relevant information that will give a positive clue about the whereabouts of the old man,” Ayeni added.

The police commissioner said there was no clue yet on the whereabouts of the man, adding that the command was “working hard to ensure that he is found alive, hale and hearty.”
He said the family reported the case to the police on Saturday, adding that efforts had been intensified since then to find his location.

Ayeni also said no person or group had demanded any ransom so far, while urging the public to oblige the police with useful information that would lead to Obi’s whereabouts
He, however, confirmed that Obi’s reported “abduction” had nothing to do with the security situation in Jos, particularly the violence on Monday.

A source close to the family has, however, alleged complicity of the family in Obi’s predicament.

“I have heard of some rumours that the abduction is meant to get a fair share of Obi’s fortune by some members of the family.

“Some of the family members are feeling left out in the sharing of the footballer’s money and have devised a way to get something,” the source, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN.

Nigerian Police, Let them wait, the kidnappers will soon come to the police station to make a report. That they kidnapped Micheal Obi, before the police will have it in their record.

Re: Mikel’s Father Missing, Not Abducted – Police by goggs(m): 2:44pm On Aug 17, 2011
legally, missing and abduction/kidnapping are two different things. The procure of declaring a person missing or kidnapped are different and very clear. The police may suspect a kidnapping, but without  a ransome demand or other evidence(s) they (police) cannot assume. Then once the evidence becomes clear,  the police can update the public accordingly. Even though some many still condemn the police for "changing' their story

I think that dispite the very many short comings of the police, somethings borthering procedure should be appreciated by all and well thought through before commenting.

I live in Niger-Delta and I understand the difference b/w "kidnapped(abducted)" and "missing". The police commissioner was right by coming up with the right expression for use in the description of the incident. The use of "abduction" paints Nigerian image black to the outsiders. It's not correct to say he is abducted without evidence. No one saw the abduction, no one or group las laid claim to the abduction. Any other evil might have happened to him other than abduction. "Abduction" is a subset of "Missing".Abduction is grave in in usage. A wrong doer remains an accused until convicted. Note Nigeria is our country we have no other. I believe Nigeria shall be better some day.

You don't need a ransom demand to confirm kidnapping. Once an individual is held against their will, it becomes a clear case of kidnapping or false imprisonment. You know people are sometimes kidnapped for reasons other than money. For instance, one parent can kidnap a child in a custody dispute and relocate to another country.

All you people criticizing the police are the true fools.  The man went missing, no one contacted his family to make any demands, how then did you come to the conclusion he was abducted.  There's a number of possible reasons a man would disappear excluding kidnapping.  It's funny how you guys just display your lack of common sense everyday.
