ASUU should call off the strike, and government should raise fees...so that universites can be adequately funded. Because that is what this strike is about. University funding. The truth is fees have to go up to ensure that universites are well funded. We cannot be pretending that running a university on 25 billion naira...the highest allocation given to one uni for next year..ie UNN is enough, when it needs 100 times that....would make it look like Oxford or Harvard. ASUU goes on strike repeatedly because they want the government to fund universites, and add more money....so that fees don't have to go up. It isn't just about their salaries. But the truth is, unless government has a secret pot of money somewhere yielding 50 trn naira daily, that is not possible...unless fees go up, or everyone...including beggars, herdsmen and farmers...pays a tax of 10-30% of their annule income to government. If not more.Maybe both. But both ASUU and government don't want to face reality, because university is the only way that poor people can get a leg up to become rich in Nigeria...or have a better life than their parents. (If my parents did not go to university, they would have been peasant farmers for life..living ina hut in a remote village somewhere). And the process is being kept cheap as possible via subsides (Yes, your government is subsidsing educaiton, or else you would have been paying fees of up to 1-2million naira or more by now). But the subsides 1) are not enough 2) are keeping universities from making enough money.. If fees go up, poor suffer. If taxes are widened to include everyone...poor suffer. So, at the end, we have to go and beg for another loan.... (And even if no one stole crude oil...2-3 m bpd revenue is not enough for 210 million people. SLS broke it down 11 years ago. And don't say agric....unless we are mechanizing our farming...forget about it. We can't compete with Europe and the USA's megamechanized farms. Minerals are just like oyel.). So, fees have to eventually go up. It's the only least worst of a host of worst solutions. I wish there was others. But in countries that have free education, everyone...poor inclusive...pays tax to the government to make it so. Education costs money...and universites eat a lotta money. 2 Likes |

Re: ASUU Divided Over Strike Suspension, Holds NEC Meeting by Nobody: 9:57am On Oct 13, 2022 |
BATified2023: There is no political things going on. The truth is, Government can stop ASUU strikes by 1.Raising fees to at least 500000 naira, at most 1million to 2 million naira yearly. OR 2.Raising the tax to gdp raito to about 40-50% from the 8.1%, and raising tax rates on rich people in Nigeria. Both are unpopular, so universites remain poorly funded. But at the end, the private unis are going to beat the public ones....because money. 1 Like |

But e be like say this ASUU balls don remain one. Because of court order they are doing head like bird wey rain beat. Buhari doesn't obey court order, why will the mighty ASUU obey? ASUU should stand their ground and give middle finger to Buhari's hired judge, if not, FG will run them street and they will go on strike again in the nearest future. Let them use thus opportunity and sort everything out. |

Enough of this madness, its the poor kids paying the prize of these unecessary tussles. ASUU stop this madness or you all resign and let us have peace the innocent students are in pain. Enough is Enough. |

ASUU is the only union we have in this country |
Re: ASUU Divided Over Strike Suspension, Holds NEC Meeting by Nobody: 10:07am On Oct 13, 2022 |
jrusky: They are not, they want your universites adequately funded...without the need for raised taxes or raised fees. The problem is, even if we remove corruption, and stealing of oil...the income we bring in from oil is not enough to fund a nation of 200 million people. The only way large countries with large populaitons fund themselves is by being industrial. But most Nigerians see their economy as a big cake to be shared, which is why we haven't and even now are not rich. Another way countries fund themselves is by having high tax to gdp ratios...like over 40%...not the 8.1% Nigeria is at. Right now, we have the fee option, and /or the taxes option and/or we completely remove subsides from petrol, and channel most of it to universites. Neither are popular with the government or with ASUU for different reasons. Hence, we keep on going on and on in circles over the same matter. |

Kasssandra: Pls what are you saying I seems not understanding your point? So because universities are under funded the students should remain at home forever or what is your point exactly? So it's ASUU that will bring the industrialisation you mentioned Pls explain your point in utmost clarity. |
Re: ASUU Divided Over Strike Suspension, Holds NEC Meeting by Nobody: 10:13am On Oct 13, 2022 |
jrusky: TLDR: Universites need extra money....and to stop ASUU from striking on the matter....fees have to go up, or 98% of working Nigerians pay taxes to the federal government so that funds can be had. |
