Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by oohunt: 4:25am On Aug 18, 2011 |
My people o, as a note of warning, DO NOT STOP ON THE RAILWAY LINE at Jibowu. I had a horrible experience with the police today at that location. I was going towards Jibowu from Western avenue, saw these policemen standing in that area, I did not think anything of it. I looked left and right to make sure there was no train coming and I saw people walking along the rail tracks with some even selling things, and I thought ok, this track is surely not functional. The car in front of me moved forward and I followed only for the car to stop suddenly because of the traffic light ahead. Didn't give me enough gap to get the back of the car away from the tracks. Within seconds, my car was surrounded by ARMED policemen. ROLL DOWN YOUR WINDOW! I did. YOU STOPPED ON THE RAIL TRACK. I tried to move forward to get away from the track, they refused. And that was where the wahala started. I was honesty shaken because they were all armed and were threatening me. After much argument, and after catching a hand full of others like me, we were taken to the Railway Police Station in Mushin. They were 10 of us. After keeping us waiting for 3 hours, they said we should come back the next day at some court somewhere to hear our sentence/fine we are going to pay. Of course it was a load of c.r.a.p! It was just too obvious what they wanted. If you see the state of this so called police station, I'll upload the photos. Bottomline, this rail track is functional even though it does not look that way and according to the DPO, there have been 4 incidences of death at those tracks. So for your own safety and to avoid police embarrassment, beware. When are we ever going to learn to be our brother's keeper in Nigeria? Should the police not be there to protect and say " get off the tracks"? And then arrest you if you refuse? Or put up a sign there? The whole ordeal was completely unnecessary. Are we ever going to change Your comments on this please. |

Nigerians and this 'culture of blame everybody else but myself', like one poster rightly commented, what you did is a serious offence in the UK and even USA, that could earn you 'points' on your driving license, suspended driving for up to a year if not more!, a huge fine or even a suspended jail term! 1 Like |

Well what you did is very bad considering it from the point of safety but those policemen were doing that for their own selfish interest. |

Good information, My Brother, we must be ready to change this country by any means necessary and so i will suggest that we put this criminals in uniform out of business and save our fellow Brothers and Sisters from further extortion, let us meet and contribute on how to erect a sign on that spot, advising motorist and pedestrian to stay off the rail track for their safety(train and vehicle collision),we can do it using rotary club or any other well known association, I am just tired of sitting down and be passing blame, I want change, Let me know what you think and i will give you my contact. |
Re: Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by dustydee: 12:24pm On Aug 19, 2011 |
I bet in the UK and US they have sign posts warning motorist. |
Re: Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by olaadegoke(m): 12:24pm On Aug 19, 2011 |
I´m sure there are signs that prohibit you from going across any railway track in the UK/US but there is non in Nigeria, |
Re: Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by fm7070: 12:25pm On Aug 19, 2011 |
This is embarassing! and harrant nonsense. Meanwhile, the Railway Corporation has failed in ensuring safety. There used to be a barrier/stopper which usually stop vehicles whenever train is coming. That is not working anymore. This is a road for God sake. how will you know whether the person in front of you want to stop or not? Nigerian police is a big social disgrace and embodiment of mediocrity capable of demoralising and distabilize a cordial society |

There have to be sign posts warning motorists of a rail track, but you are allowed to drive by if there is an incoming train. Also, the rail track is closed when there is an incoming train. |

fm7070: |M|tcheeeewww!!! Grammer!!!!! You are just rubishing the police without taking one sec to think about d error on the poster's part. I know how Nigerians drive in hold ups or traffic light just to beat the traffic or block others from going or changing lanes. I strongly think he deliberately tried beating the light even when he knew he couldn't had made it. So when he was impounded he is now giving us a quality report of 1st person point of view using the 'already useless' police men as an emblem |

oohunt, Where there is no law, there is no crime. Did you observe if there was any road sign making it UNLAWFUL if you stayed on the track like the yellow line marking as OFF SIDE? If there were none, then tell me what law have you contravened!!! If it were simply the 'conscious' awareness for the safety and the authorities concenrned have not provided a barier or at worst a road sign, then who should have been liable? Even in the US/UK, there is no rail crossing without a barier/road sign. so do not compare these places to Nigeria. I live in the UK and know pretty well what applies here. You have simply fell into the booty trap of the NP who take delight in extorting you. I was once stopped by the police while making a u-turn under National Stadium bridge (coming from oju elegba). The policeman argued that I was not supposed to turn mean while there was no road sign. After a long argument/counter argumnet, his boss intervened and allowed me to go . Of course never paid a kobo. I was dead determined to report them and escalate the issue to every quarters and to the press. Next time nknow your right abnd make good defence |

The OP simply does not understand the gravity of the offence he/she commited; in the UK, you will be lucky to get away with £1000 fine if you ride roughshod over a railway track! |
Re: Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by aieromon(m): 1:06pm On Aug 19, 2011 |
At Pen Cinema Agege, there'a always someone there to make sure you don't stop on the rail tracks when there is traffic.I bet these rogues were stationed to warn and not intimidate motorists. |
Re: Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by Outstrip(f): 1:13pm On Aug 19, 2011 |
This culture of pulling out weapons in unarmed people should be outlawed. A police man caught doing that should be fired. End of story. I am not sure why the poster is being blamed though I agree he should have been more careful. You should not even follow a car that closely especially if you see that there might be a chance that you will not make the clearance. Always give yourself a two car clearance because even if you barely clear the tracks a train can still nick you and drag your car. Sorry for the scare. |
Re: Nigerian Police Harassment @ Jibowu Railway Track by haboosa(m): 1:14pm On Aug 19, 2011 |
@ OP, i am a mushin boy and i can tell you that those police took that place as their check point even since early 1999 , i want to tell you that the day the maintenance soldiers at Abati barracks taught them a reasonable lesson over the usual illegal extortion the use to do it wasnt easy at all that day, the soldiers arrest their DPO join sef , they got the beating of their life so they took a recces off the place , i think they are just returning back now for the normal biz , i promise you before the end of the end of this year they will have their hands get burnt |

Nice move! This shows that the NPF is doing some great job around human safety. However the Nigerian Railway Corporation should post signs waring motorists. |
