Is Speaking In Tongues A must When One Is Baptized With The Holy Ghost? by Steep: 8:07pm On Oct 16, 2022
These days, it is easy to often hear that speaking in tongues is a must when one is filled with the holy ghost. However a careful study of scripture does not support such notation.
There are times when the baptism of the holy ghost was accompanied with speaking of tongues while there are other times it is absent.

Take note speaking in tongues is not the same praying in tongues.

Praying in tongues is not the sign holy ghost baptism but rather speaking in tongues.
But however.

Why was speaking in tongues common in the early days of the church?
It was a sign to the Jewish nation that the belivers in Jesus were of God and God was judging the Jewish nation.
Isaiah 28 vv 11.
Speaking in tongues is not the only sign that one is of the Lord. So, what happened is that whenever a man is converted and baptized in the holy ghost the holy spirit gave them a sign, this sign is relevant to the Jewish community. Infact Jewish Christians who had reservation concerning the salvation of the gentiles gave glory to God when the gentiles spake in tongues just like them. Mind you speaking in tongues is not learnt, it is not copied, it is not a product of feeling or trying to blend in, it is spontaneous and free itself.
People who does not even know what is called speaking intongues and have not heard anyone spoke all of a sudden begins to speak after laying of hand or hearing the word.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

From this verse verse we can count upto 5 signs here.
1 .casting out demons
2. Speaking in tongues.
3. Taking up serpents without suffering harm
4. drinking deadly things without getting harm.
5. Healing the sick.

Every true Christians must have at least one of these signs.

Paul said speaking of tongues must be accompanied by interpretation in the church.
Because speaking is for communication but praying in tongues is for self edification
It is the speaking of intongues that majorly accompanied the holy ghost baptism in the early church because it was a sign to the Jewish Community not praying in tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

When praying in an unknown tongue, the spirit is praying, there is absolutely no understanding however it is possible to pray with the spirit and pray with the understanding.
Without understanding one cannot guide his or her prayer.

If it is a must, it means you cannot get the holy spirit without getting the speaking in tongues.

If you can get the holy spirit without speaking in tongues, it means speaking in tongues is not a must.

1. Speaking/praying in an unlearned language is not a sign of the presence of the Spirit of Truth aka the Spirit of God whom Jesus Christ instead taught abides only in those who through obedience to His teachings and commandments - not simply in anyone who is born-again - John 14 vs 15 - 20. In addition, it should logically follow that what you consider praying in tongues is meaningless given that so long as a new language is present, one is able to do pretty much anything in said language including praying in the new language. undecided

2. Again, neither of that which is written in Isaiah 28 vs 9 - 13 nor that stated by Jesus Christ Himself in Mark 16 vs 15 - 19 confirms this claim of yours that the phenomenon is directly related to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. undecided

3. At least one?
15 He said to them, “Go everywhere in the world. Tell the Good News to everyone.
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. But those who do not believe will be judged guilty.
17 And the people who believe will be able to do these things as proof: They will use my name to force demons out of people. They will speak in languages they never learned.
18 If they pick up snakes or drink any poison, they will not be hurt. They will lay their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” - Mark 16 vs 15 - 18
According to Jesus Christ, it is instead the case that all those who believe in Him will do ALL of that which He indicated. undecided

4. undecided

If you are a Yoruba, you can should be able to speak on Yoruba and also pray in Yoruba.

When you are baptized with the Holy Spirit, the first visible sign is the unknown tongue you speak.

And if you can speak in this unknown tongue, you can also pray in it.

So, I don't understand why you are trying to make irrelevant differences between both.

They are both from the same source. And the experience is one, not two.

Read carefully they are not the same.
One is speaking in tongues the other is praying in tongues.

If one should speak in tongues in the church he or she needs to interpret because speaking in tongues in the church has only one purpose and that is for communication.

1st Corinthians 14:28
But IF THERE BE NO INTERPRETER, let him keep silence in the church; and let him SPEAK TO HIMSELF, AND TO GOD.

The above verse says you are permitted to speak to yourself and to God if there be no interpreter.

So, I can be in church speaking to myself and to God. And when you speak to God in tongues, it becomes prayer.

nope, tongues should not be spoken in church if there is no interpretation.
Yes praying in tongues is speaking in tongues to God but for the sake of clarification set a distinction between praying in tongues and speaking in tongues to men.

When Peter was sent to the household of Cornelius, the Holy Ghost fell on them and they all spoke in tongues.

They had church and Peter did not stop them.

Church is not a physical building. It is where two or three people are gathered in his name.

Are you saying that the Holy Spirit made a mistake in falling on them in a church gathering?

Acts 10:44-45
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

If you are filled with the Holy Ghost, you can both speak in tongues and also pray in tongues.

Praying in tongues is speaking to God in tongues.

Just the same way when you are praying in English, you are also speaking to God in English.

Why will one be baptized with the holy ghost in the first place?

You are saved by your belief that's all.
You don't need all these religious formalities of baptism of the water or holy ghost or speaking in tongues or whatever. Though they are not bad but they aren't necessary. They are only meant for the show.
The real thing is Romans 10:8

Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

Just say the word that's all it requires, you can even say it in your heart.

What is the word to say?
The word is, THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST which is your belief

It is no problem for a new convert like Cornelius to speak in tongues for the first time without interpretation but subsequently he would need an interpreter.

The scripture is clear if you cannot interpret then keep quiet.

Read 1 Corinthians 14
1 Corinthians 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

14:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the LORD.

14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.

14:30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.

14:31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Tongues are both for personal edification and for congregational use. It is only when it is for congregational use that interpretation is required.

You can speak in tongues in church for personal edification and to God.

Even Apostle Paul said that when he speaks in tongues, he does not understand what he is saying - 1st Corinthians 14:14.

Apostle Paul didn't discourage anyone from speaking in tongues. Rather he said, ".. forbid not to speak with tongues." (1st Corinthians 14:39).

He even boasted he prays in tongues more than everyone in his days.

Nobody said Paul discourage people from speaking in tongues but there must be interpretation.

Paul said he will pray with the spirit and pray with the understanding.

Paul speak in tongues more anyone else in his days yet he said he will rather speak five words with his understanding than speaking in tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

If everybody were speaking in tongues in church will an unbeliever not say they are mad?

1 Corinthians 14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
