How Governors shared billions despite Okonjo-Iweala’s plea to impoverish Nigeria – Peter Obi

Former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has revealed that state governors during the last administration shared billions among themselves.

Obi said this on Wednesday morning while analysing the state of the economy on Channels TV.

He recalled how the former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala begged the State Governors at the time to save for the future in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), a programme that was meant to save fund for the nation, but most of them refused and shared the money.

Obi said, “Over the years, things have gone wrong, I remember Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala crying every day to governors to save these monies and invest in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), a programme that was meant to save fund for the nation to cater for a rainy day as presently experienced.

“All of us disagreed and said let’s share it. some governors even went to court to get the federal government to allow them to share the money among themselves. ”

Further speaking, Obi called on the federal government to stop borrowing as they keep plunging Nigeria into poverty.

“Borrowing for consumption will not grow the economy, it gets to a state where you can’t control it. The amount being used to service our debt today is high, we use almost 60% to service them and we are borrowing more, it’s escalating.

“World Bank and IMF have warned Nigeria against rising debt.

“You are borrowing money and the issues that it was supposed to affect is not coming down. Unemployment is worsening. Our unemployment rate moved from 14.8% to 18.8% this year, which means more people have lost their jobs.

“The economy is shrinking, the entire capital votes this year ‘is’ borrowed, and we have existing debts already. Poverty is increasing, out of school children have moved from 10 million to almost 12 million,” Obi added.

I call on Seun and other moderators to graciously move this thread to front page. This alone is enough to declare Obi president by tomorrow.

Clear as daylight! Only Peter asked that we saved excess. Amaechi and his band of APC mongrels instead demanded the monies be shared and squandered. Today see where we are. Dollar at ₦900 to $1

So under Okojo we had only 4 governors many of you IG os overwise

Under Obasanjo when no president was spending the savings how many governors moved to deplete the saving after Jonathan was discovered to be spending the money why won't other governor support sharing the money instead of one criminal deciding to spend it on their behalf or you are oblivious to why the governors wanted the money shared according to the federation account ratio.

Beside what were the position of Igbo state governors of

Abia
Ebonyi
Imo
Enugu

Or Nigeria only had 4 governors when Iweala was finance minister ?

Obi did wonders in my home state, Anambra. All the major hospitals in Anambra has school of nursing built by Obi. Iyienu, Ihiala etc. He invested heavily in roads, health care facilities and education.

Have you see our health infrastructures compare to many state who were created same year as us. He transformed our primary and secondary schools standards in Anambra.

QRC catholic girls boarding school Onicha and CKC boys high school are some of the very best government owned schools in Nigeria.

Can't you guys ever see beyond your myopic ethnic lenses? What brought about Igbo states now? Did the Op claim that only Igbos have the best interest of Nigeria at heart?

It's about the person of Peter Obi, not Igbo this or anti-Yoruba that. For most of the other Igbo aspirants that lost out at both APC and PDP primaries, we care less. Most of them don't deserve my respect. Peter Obi is a rare gem. He just happens to be Igbo, and that shouldn't add to or remove from my respect for good character.

God bless Nigeria

Can you help us with a breakdown of the full list of governors who were for/against the sharing?
