16 tips on managing up as a career starter:

🌺 Just like you, your boss is human. Except something is wrong and beyond your control, you should be able to relate with them without fear.

🌺 Observe your manager: their working style, how they communicate with others and what they prioritize. Adapt your style with theirs as much as you can. Where you disagree, apply wisdom.

🌺 You are being assessed in the first few times of meeting with them. The early days are important to aid in how you are perceived. So, ensure you are putting the right foot forward.

🌺 Timidity has no place in a busy highly pressured environment. Get confident. Get some strength in your voice.

🌺 Every meeting is your meeting, prepare for it and have your agenda. You will be shocked at how much value you can get from preparing ahead of time. It is also an avenue to show your brilliance. Take it and ride with it. 😉

🌺 If you hear anything or read anything that impacts your team, bring it up so that they can have ample time to deal with it.

🌺 If you can, let your boss know if they make you feel in some type of way or if you are unhappy with them. Discuss it with them first before reporting it up the chain of command.

🌺 If you think your boss handled a difficult meeting incredibly well, or they did something well, tell them. Trust me on this, the higher you go, the lesser ‘well done’ you get. So, hearing it from you will make them feel better and warm up to you even more.

🌺 During extremely busy periods, if you can, make yourself available, and travel to where they are if you can, that extra level of support from you matters.

A solid understanding of financial statistics and accounting principles
