Follow up to the Wednesday meeting between the Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria, representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Transport & the Lagos Parks & Garages Management Committee.

PunchLive Space with Oluwakemi Abimbola:

Explanations from the co-host, @DanielChibuzo8 (CelebrityDanfoDriver), a member of JDWAN after today's meeting.

1. He claimed the meeting had been postponed twice because members of the Lagos State Parks & Garages (P&G) Management Committee were absent.

2. That he was present at the Alausa HQs but not in the meeting because it was strictly for the EXCOs. Phones & Recordings were not allowed but they had been communicated to, by their people.

3. That representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Transport (LSMoT) insisted that they are not aware of any extortion by members of any Union.

4. That the LSMoT advised JDWAN to liaise with the Parks and Garages Management Committee to settle the issues.

5. That they have suspended the strike today.

6. That JDWAN will meet with the Parks & Garages Committee for amicable resolution.

7. That if not listened to, a more forceful approach will be implemented from November 12, 2022.

Following questions from Speakers;

He also stated that the Lagos State Consolidated ticket (N800) is been paid by drivers daily, however, several checkpoints are mounted where illegal levies are collected.

At some Parks, three passengers are allocated to Owo Chairman, booking and loading, etc. and they sometimes pay between N5800 to N7000 daily. Again, he explained that there is a subsisting order of the Federal High Court in Lagos, outlawing illegal levies from Union, but the Government seems non-committal.

He stated that their struggle is mainly to correct three things:
- Illegal tolling.
- Harassment from task force officials and 'agberos'.
- Communal Relationship.

In Summary:
They want these agberos off the road and be told in clear terms how much they should pay daily.[/i]

He added that some of their members were also arrested and presently in Police Custody.

Onyebuchi Michael was arrested on Monday at Alafia, Orile Police Station. He was charged to Court and has been transferred to Onikan Zone 2.

Ibrahim Adisa and Felix were also arrested for joining the strike, perhaps protesting. They are presently at Area 'K' Police Station and efforts to release them have been futile.

The meeting of the Lagos State Government representatives with striking members of the Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria has been adjourned till Friday.

This is also as JDWAN has said that its strike action also continues pending the Friday meeting.

These were disclosed in a statement issued late Wednesday by JDWAN National Leader, Abiodun Akintade, some hours after the drivers’ meeting with the statement government, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola.

According to JDWAN, representatives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employers Association were reportedly around, “but left before our arrival.”

“We made our presentation on the situations that caused the strike and our demands. The government’s team feigned sympathy with us. They, however, said they wanted us to have both representatives of the NURTW and the RTEAN to also be in the negotiations so they could present their own sides of the story,” Akintade said in the statement.

“So, the meeting was adjourned till Friday by 12pm at the Alausa Secretariat,” he added.

The PUNCH reports that the Lagos drivers had on Monday, October 31, 2022, embarked on a seven-day warning strike to press home demands against extortions and harassments allegedly by members of the Lagos State Parks and Garages Management Committee.

The strike action has since caused inconveniences for commuters, who could not easily navigate through their daily routes from the first day of the strike.

JDWAN thanked the drivers “for steadfastness, loyalty, and dedication to this struggle for our freedom. We want them to be patient and keep on with the strike until the Friday meeting. By Friday, the strike would be five working days, and we are happy that we have been justified largely thus far,” the statement said.

“We want lagosians whom are our customers and commuters to bear with us as we all face the consequences of extortion. But we cannot be working like machines and few people would be eating like gluttons. How monkey dey work, and na baboons dey chop?! This must not continue!” the drivers lamented.

JDWAN also alleged that its members’ vehicles that were vandalised by the motor park thugs and were yet to be repaired, adding that, “two of our members are still locked up at Morogbo Police Station (Area K Command, Badagry) without committing any crime. The officers in charge are mandating us to beg the Agberos before they can be released. We demand unconditional release of our members immediately.”

“We also want to say that we are amazed that representatives suddenly emerge from the NURTW and the RTEAN that has been banned in Lagos State. While JDWAN is not affiliated to both and our members are not official members of both unions, we call on the National Leadership of the NURTW and the RTEAN to publicly clarify our doubts,” Akintade added.

tongue

Three major reasons for the proposed general strike by Lagos state bus drivers.

Illegal tolling.

- Harassment from task force officials and 'agberos'.

- Communal Relationship.

Tinubu is the founding father of all this tongue undecided

You can't really blame them, they got no choice. Many of them feed on daily money they make from their transport business.

They are always at the mercy of the agberos.

Why not allow the union to issue a statement from the above nothing seem to have been resolved

There should some just be a single ticket that every driver should pay that covers for the day ..
If it's 500 or 5000 let it be fixed and know so Lagosians would know who to blame for increased fare
