Pat Utomi has called for the disqualification of any candidate found missing at the election debates, while addressing journalist in Abuja.

Utomi explained that debates provide the electorates with an opportunity to assess the plans and capacity of candidates before the elections.

He said, “The fortunes of South Korea were turned around because the electoral commission was so despondent about the quality of their politics that they decided that the thing that should matter the most for elections are debates between candidates,” he said.

“So it became entrenched in the conventions of South Korean politics. Before anybody goes to an election, they would have had a series of debates on the streets, in town halls, on television to define South Korean elections.

“Once debates came to define elections, moneybags and all kinds of criminals and charlatans ran away and their electoral process became one of a sustained, enormously developed country.”

“So any politician that refuses to make this fundamental contribution to the democratic process should be considered unfit, unable and unwilling to participate in the democratic process,” he said.

According to Utomi, if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not have the courage to disqualify such a candidate, the electorates should do so on election day.

Recall that INEC had fixed February 25 as the date for the presidential and national assembly elections. The governorship and state assembly elections will are expected to hold on March 11, 202

With all due respect in the world, i think Prof. Pat Utomi is high on some cheap drugs.

Just look at him making references to South-Korea political settings just like a clueless Peter Obi will always do when trying to dodge and maneuver his way cunningly when been faced with discussions far above his intellectual capacity.

Firstly, the main aim of political debate is to educate, and elucidiate your plans for a greater country and stress more on why people should vote for you.

But in Nigeria here where we have a very silly journalist and supposedly debate organisers or interview host conniving with opposition parties to plan your downfall. Throwing cheap subs in a very obvious manner at a specific candidate.

A very smart man like Asiwaju Tinubu will rather spend his time making political moves, strategising, meeting the main voters and discussing his plans with them RATHER than honouring a mediocre comedy show of a debate which was poorly coordinated, where 80% of the viewers will be the same people sitting at the front of their TV on Election day and on their phones gossiping away about the election rather than going out to vote.

Elections are not won by jumping on every interview or debate to seek public validations but by meeting the real voters directly through town hall meetings and engagements, telling them your plans face-to-face.

Isn't he a lawyer? Why does he speak an illiterate? Where's the law saying a candidate must attend a debate especially in an environment where the organizers don't even hide their partisanship.

Sometimes one is left wondering how some people manage to get to certain level with their reasoning.this man should be better informed that debates are not part of constitutional requirements of an aspirant.and if the need be,it is inec that can organize such and not every Tom dick and Harry.

How can you disqualify a candidate when it’s not stated in the constitution or electoral act laws.

The number of people that will vote for Tinubu will determine the number of illiterates, ignorant folks will have in Nigeria. Only dumb skulls will hire someone without interview.

You are the one high on cheap kobo kobo drugs. You are probably using a Samsung or Asian tiger phone to type this nonsense thread. But you don't want Tinubu to appear for debate like the south Korea candidates do. You couldn't even understand what the man was saying, you just jumped on the bandwagon of cluelessness.

I read through your entire thread and saw nonsense upon no sense. Elections are won by engaging people in town hall, complete balderdash. Which US candidate will skip the debate and still expect to get one vote.

How many people even have electricity to watch the nonsense debate, what channel is even broadcasting the nonsense debate?

Waste your time for politicians to tell you fables because you have nothing else to watch on television?

Mumus everywhere on Nairaland will always make the loudest noise, no be say they even get television or money to subscribe for goal tv, let alone DSTV.

Cable tv is now so cheap that every Tobi, Ibrahim and Chike can afford it. And besides, if the candidates show genuine interest, efforts can be made to also transmit it by radio.

90% of the eligible voters have no business with the mediums you mentioned, it will not shape or influence who they vote for.

The North will vote Tinubu, the South West will vote Tinubu Which will be more than adequate to Aso Rock.

Is this not Nigeria? only Mumus believe APC has any plans of handing over to any opposition party, no honor amongst thieves.
