Governance is difficult, especially from an economic perspective. Some decisions will lead to gains in the long run but will cause short-term pain. I believe Buhari took some hard decisions that offer great promise for the future.

For instance, the import restriction on things like rice has allowed the rice industry to grow, which is now set to turn Nigeria into a net exporter of rice, and a dominant player in the west African rice milling industry. Unfortunately, insecurity has meant that farmers are unable to go to the farms, and this has meant that we have not been fully able to take full advantage of the opportunity. But as the war against insecurity makes progress, so also will our progress with agriculture, and rice production especially.

Secondly, one of the really notable things Buhari has done is to create an enabling atmosphere for free and fair elections. With the passing into Law of the new electoral Act, and clamping down on hoarded cash, the electoral playing field is much more level today, than it has ever been in Nigeria.

We have also seen that under Buhari, our military has made a series of acquisitions of advanced military equipment which have reflected in serious gains in the war against terror in Nigeria. In the past regime, we saw that these monies have been squandered by politicians, thereby putting soldiers' lives in danger. In the early days of Buhari's regime, we saw similar issues, however, with the service chiefs rotated out, we have not heard such stories in years.

Finally, we have also seen that the military is taking control of troubled spots across the nation. People can now travel Abuja - Kaduna road. Life has gone back to normal in most of the northeast. Fulani herdsmen no longer go on the rampage as before, though they have not completely quit their nefarious activities.

We've also heard, recently, how Buhari released billions of naira to the south-south oil-producing states, which had been denied them since the Obasanjo days.

There are good days on the horizon for the Republic if the next president will build on these developments.
