What's A Fair Salary For A Junior Software Engineer In Nigeria? by Luckydonalds(m): 6:55pm On Nov 20, 2022
I will be graduating school June/July next year with a first class degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.

I don't want to waste much time so I'd like to enter the job market immediately upon graduation.

I intend to start applying for jobs early next year in anticipation for my graduation but I don't know what to expect as total compensation for junior developers who are staffed full time.

Some of my friends have already taken up full time jobs while being students but they paid the price with their grades yet their compensation is grossly appalling (100k - 150k max)

Question is, what is the median compensation for a junior developer with 0 YOE and above average coding skills in Nigeria?

And how is the WLB too?, I don't plan on killing myself or working extra hours for any company.

My major goal is to get enough money to fund my Master's abroad if international scholarships become too difficult to get.

cc qtguru, tensa, hannania and all the other Egbons wey dey motivate nobodies like me.

You answered yourself here now.

But one guy like that got a job of 430k+

Another one here got 240+

It really depends on the firm/company or startup that employs you.

I know a guy who offers junior salary of 40k

It really depends on the company you applied and what you're willing to take.

Some people are just desperate or want to pad their CV so they'll just accept anything at first then move on later .

Isn't 150k too small. Such salary won't go anywhere if you're based in Lagos. My friends work remotely from school so dey can afford to save much on that amount. I don't want to start my career working remotely, I need to start in office so I can network and secure connections. With the rising cost of living, 150k per month will have little to nothing saved after removing all expenses

Like I said... I highly doubt there's anything as average salary in Nigeria.

Salary is relative depending on the company u find yourself.

You're most likely not going to get the pay you deserve in Nigeria as a Junior or an entry level Dev.

Sometimes u take up these types of job to build your CV and learn more.

Very hard to see a company willing to pay u 300k+ in Nigeria as a Junior developer.... it's very hard but not unheard of.

So.... 150k in Nigeria as a junior is kinda good (Nigerian standard good) to build your Cv while u search for something better and increase your knowledge.

Firstly, what skills do you have? What niche are you targeting?

I'll give you real figures based on guys I know while in school and working for Nigerian Banks as developers.

One was working with Sterling bank and making 230k. The other was working with Golang at an undisclosed bank(a new project that he had to keep us abey) he was making 300k with a brand-new Apple Mac. But here's the hack, he had a remote job paying in $$$ which made the compensation a child's play. He's in Holland as we speak.

For Fin-techs, it's from 200k and floats to 300k

Nigerian developer salary is not juicy at entry level. Unless for the fortunate Geeks at Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, Ericsson, and other MNCs. Apart from Microsoft, all those are mostly senior devs.

I don't know what your skills are, but if you'll be working as a Network or Electrical Engineer, then expect from 150-400k(Ericsson pays this much)

these figures are there for a few. You hardly see job postings.

Backend engineer using Java Spring boot or Nodejs.
I'm not really interested in working as network admin/power systems engineer.
That is also why I'm specialising in electronics and computer engineering at school. I ditched both communications and power systems.

How do Microsoft Lagos recruit new grads? Do they advertise the job postings? What's the payment like? What's the interview like?
I can become a fortunate geek if push comes to shove.

Java Pays well. Please cast your net beyond Nigerian waters. There are a lot of Java niche roles. Sadly you said you're not open to remote gigs for now. Well! The good news is that Banks and Fin-Techs need Java devs

Most of the engineers at Microsoft Nigeria working at Software Engineer II level are 90% from Banks and FinTechs. The new grads were mostly picked via referral. They're very few in number and mostly have internships with mostly London experience or Dublin cheesy.

For the pay, I don't know of added peaks, but an offer was once revealed here at 850k for new grads.
