The party was formed in 2002 as the Party for Social Democracy. It's name was officially changed to the Labour Party after the 2003 general election Olusegun Mimiko, ran successfully as Governor of Ondo State under the banner of the Labour Party for a period of two terms(2009-2017)

In 2015 APC gain power to defeat PDP in the Presidential election, and won as the leading party in Nigeria.

Since then till this present, Nigeria Economy crash to the worst in the history of Nigeria under the ruling party of All Progressives Congress (APC)

APC takeover in 2015, and rule Nigeria till present for 8 years.

In 1998 the PDP in it's first Presidential primary held in Jos, Plateau State, north central Nigeria nominated former Military Leader Olusegun Obasanjo who had just been released from detention as political prisoner.

As the Presidential candidate in the elections of February 1999, with Atiku Abubakar (Governor- Elect of Adamawa State and a former leading member of the Social Democratic Party) as his running mate. They won the presidential election and were inaugurated 29 may 1999.
