It seems like this is going to be an issue in every country very soon.

Politicians are using songs to motivate their members at their conventions and rallies and the musicians, who often oppose the politicians, are not finding it funny.

In the 2000s the PDP used an artiste's song (I think it was D'Banj's Tongolo, I can't remember for sure) and the artiste confirmed that he didn't give them permission to use the song. However, on that occasion, the artiste didn't make a big deal of it.


Ahead of the 2020 United States presidential election, Donald Trump used the song, YMCA, by the Village People at his campaign rallies. If you know the Village People and you know Donald Trump, you would know that there would be a big problem. Sure enough, the Village People issued a cease and desist notice to President Trump (he actually used the song one more time after the notice was issued).


The APC played Timi Dakolo's song, Great Nation, at its 2022 National Convention and presidential primaries. The singer was livid that they played his song without permission.


The Conservative Party played M People's song, Moving On Up, when Prime Minister Liz Truss took the stage at their party conference recently. The band was very angry that the Tories used the song, but they also expressed frustration that they can't do anything about it (I'm not sure, but I think the right to the song now belongs to the record company).
