You cannot discuss distribution of FMCs without factoring in population and and other federal hospitals in a state.

Katsina state is one of the most populous states in Nigeria, yet the state has only one federal hospital. Apart from being populous, Katsina state has scattered densely populated cities across the state unlike Kano, Sokoto, and Lagos states where the people are concentrated at the capitals.

Apart from big teaching hospitals, states like Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano, and Lagos have federal speciality hospitals that are even better than some FMCs. Even Jigawa state now has a federal teaching hospital and an FMC.

And the author doesn't even seem to understand the logic behind creating FMCs. The initial idea was to create an FMC in states without teaching hospitals, that's some of the states mentioned do not have FMCs, because they have big teaching hospitals.

Buhari is not the only head of state in the world that does uses foreign hospitals. As far back the early 70's the house of Saud used UCH. Almost every person in Nigeria with $50k NAV has a global health plan.

If you've used a foreign hospital before becoming famous, you will continue using it.


If you have issues with data privacy, you will probably go abroad.

If you have a condition that requires you to use an experimental drug you will travel abroad.

There are foreign leaders who fly in foreign medical teams with containerized medical units and those units are flown out again. Is this local treatment because it takes place on local soil. You prefer that? You prefer opacity over transparency?

Presidential libraries are private projects funded by an outgoing president. Most times, they are built after the president has left office.

Obasanjo's presidential library was privately funded. Well meaning Nigerians, high networth individuals, and powerful friends donated money for it. It is never built with government funds.

FMC on the other hand is a government project. Siting 2 in the president's home state can only be due to the well known nepotic nature of Buhari. This is the reason his daughter was appointed into the Board of NNPC. It's just his normal nepotism.
