You can ask the same quesiton about a lot of people, most of whom are not policemen, or drunk, who acted impulsively and caused the death of someone else.

The other day, a young American man accidentally killed his young son by forgetting him in a hot car . The man then went on to commit suicide. Nothing in the man's history would have predicted he would have made such a mistake.

The law says he's innocent until proven guilty, even as he committed the offence in the presence of witnesses and he himself isn't denying culpability. Now, he will be charged to court and the lawyers will defend him vigorously. The case will go all the way from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and in about 8-10 years ends up in the Supreme. If you're thinking the culprit doesn't stand a chance of eventually getting an acquittal, there's no need to call you, I'm sorry, a mumu.

He may dodge the premeditated murder charge... But can't escape the negligence/manslaughter snare as it was probably an accidental discharge. All in all, he's spending at least ten years behind bars including the awaiting trial period.
