Pele( 1940-2022); Exit Of The King Of Football https://www.nairaland.com/7502151/pele-1940-2022-exit-king-football

Brazil football legend, Pele, who died on Thursday at the age of 82, was regarded as the game’s greatest player.

Pele was the best-loved footballer of his or any other generation, the eternal master of the beautiful game.

Here are 13 things to know about Pele:

1. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in October 1940, Pele played his first game for Santos as a 15-year-old in 1956.

2. Pele won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970. His sumptuous range of skills made him the embodiment of his country’s golden age of football.

3. When Pele finally retired in 1977, he had scored more than 1,000 goals.

4. Pele scored 77 for Brazil, a mark only equalled at the recent World Cup by Neymar.

5. Pele’s impact on his sport went far beyond the pitch as he also became a money-making phenomenon, lending his name to sportswear, credit cards and watches among an array of products.

6. Pele earned a call-up to the national team in 1957, scoring on his debut against Argentina. In 1958, he was picked for the World Cup in Sweden.

7. Still only 17, Pele had become the youngest World Cup winner in history. The next two tournaments, however, were to be unhappy experiences.

8. Twenty-one by the time of the 1962 World Cup in Chile, an older, stronger Pele had been expected to take the tournament by storm.

9. Though he was to continue playing club football for his beloved Santos and later the New York Cosmos, Pele retired from international duty in 1971, making an emotional farewell in front of 180,000 fans at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro.

10. In 1977, he inspired New York to the national title in his final season with the club which featured fellow greats Franz Beckenbauer, Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia and former Brazil captain Carlos Alberto.

11. He appeared in the 1981 film, Escape to Victory, about Allied Prisoners of War during World War II along with the likes of Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone and Moore.

12. Between 1995 and 1998, he was even Brazil’s Extraordinary Minister for Sport, while he also regularly appeared in public as an ambassador for numerous commercial brands.

13. He married for the third time in 2016, tying the knot with Marcia Aoki.

-Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in October 1940, Pele played his first game for Santos as a 15-year-old in 1956.

-Pele won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970. His sumptuous range of skills made him the embodiment of his country’s golden age of football.

-When Pele finally retired in 1977, he had scored more than 1,000 goals.
According to Wikipedia, it was not long before he was making his senior debut, aged 15, on 7 September 1956, scoring the first of more than 1,000 career goals in a 7-1 win against Corinthians Santo Andre.

It was inevitable international honours would follow swiftly and he donned the famous Brazil shirt for the first time on 9 July 1957 against Argentina at the Maracana aged 16 years and nine months, scoring number one of 77 goals in 92 appearances for his country in a 2-1 defeat.

In Brazil, Pele will also be associated with the white shirt of Santos, for whom he scored 619 goals in 638 appearances which, coupled with his glorious deeds for his country, gave him in his homeland at least – the undisputed title of the game’s greatest player.

Brazil’s 1970 World Cup win was the pinnacle of Pele’s career. He was the focal point of a dream team that has become enshrined in the game’s history. Pele may have been the headline act but such names as Rivelino, Jairzinho, Tostao and Gerson, as well as the great captain and leader Carlos Alberto accompanied him.

Testimony to Pele’s brilliance are two occasions in the 1970 Mexico World Cup when he failed to score – and yet are used to this day as prime exhibits of the skill, power, elegance and mental speed and agility that mark him out as arguably the greatest to have ever graced the game"

Pele really has a chequered history. He was simply a legendary hero in his own class.

Una just dey shout greatest of all time. Pele era where defense be like water.. era wey you go play one slow ball to post keeper go stretch him life yet him hand no go reach. Check most of his goals.. cheap goals he wouldn't even score from the 90s till date. Pele was good but if he had played in this era, it wouldn't have been easy for him and he would have just being an ordinary player.

Don't get me wrong, Pele is great. If you say he's the greatest of all time, I won't argue because it's your opinion. Even someone like delima Ronaldo or Adriano Leite Ribeiro would have done wonders in that era.

Most of you shouting Pele up and down didn't even watch him play...just hearsay and stories passed down from generations to generations. Except of course you were born or old enough to understand football between 1953 and 1977 ... Same way you'll pass down the story of zlatan ibrahimovic future kids would think he was even greatest ever.

If Pele era came in this dispensation of the internet and technological advancements, no one would ascribe the GOAT status to anyone else but PELE.

It is even rumoured that even the late Queen Elizabeth in her younger and more glorious days was in awe of Pele that she broke the royal status quo by hugging him in the full glare of the media.

Pele was a phenomenon in and off the pitch. Surely the World of football have sparogatively lost an unrivaled gem.
