This article seeks to answer all your common queries about Proof of Funds (POF) and put you on the right step.

What is Proof of Funds:

A proof of funds is a document that attests to a person's financial self-sufficiency. The anticipated quantity of money varies according to the country of study or immigration and the unique circumstances of the individual. Here is how it is typically determined:
Proof of financial ability to pay tuition and living expenses in the host country may be requested for international students. Typically, students applying to colleges and universities are expected to demonstrate financial stability by presenting documentation of twelve months' worth of living expenditures. A university in the United States, for instance, would ask for proof of annual income of $30,000 to $40,000.

Immigration: The financial documentation needed to immigrate varies by country of destination and visa category. For instance, some nations need evidence that you can financially sustain yourself for a year or six months. When investing in a business or property abroad, some nations may insist on seeing proof of financial stability. Proof of investment of between $50,000 and $100,000, for instance, may be necessary in some countries.

In any situation, you might need to show proof of financial stability by providing documents like a bank statement, savings account statement, or investment portfolio. It is recommended that you research the precise requirements for evidence of finances with the appropriate authorities or colleges.

Refusals to grant Student Visas are typically associated with the applicant's inability to provide sufficient proof to pass the "upkeep test" (discussed further below). Therefore, we have compiled some FAQs that could be useful as you get ready to apply for a Student Visa. Don't skim this material; study it thoroughly and use the suggestions made. While we will do our best to help, your visa application is ultimately your responsibility, and we can only provide general direction.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Question 1: How Soon Should I commence my Visa Application

Answer:
Six (6) months prior to the start date of your course as mentioned in your CAS is the earliest you can apply for a Student Visa. The UK Home Office will not accept your visa application before this date. Applying too late may cause you to miss your desired start date. You should get your visa application in as soon as you are eligible, so it's best to get everything you need ready in advance.

Question 2: How Much Would I Need To Show Prospective School or for Immigration

Answer:

If you want to study in the United Kingdom, you'll need to show that you can afford the first year's worth of tuition and living expenses before applying for a student visa. This is the "maintenance test/Funds Needed" that is so commonly used. The Immigration Rules of the United Kingdom set the amount you can get to meet your daily expenses.
Depending on the duration of your program, you may be required to present evidence of a certain amount in order to determine the amount required.
The amount you will need depends on where you will be studying:
• £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London
• £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London

Refer to https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/money

For University of Hull, You will be requiring £9207 as your living expenses for 9months being a city outside London

Please see the table below for breakdown:
Duration of Programme Funds Required
9 months or more Tuition Fees on your CAS + £9207
Lower than 9Months Calculate £1,023 for each month to be spent plus tuition fees as stated on your CAS

If the University of Hull states that your study fee is £11000, It means you will need £11000 + £9207 = £20,207.00

Please note that the amount expected can be shown in pounds, dollars or any other world recognized currency. The equivalent of the estimated amount can be converted to Naira using www.oanda.com/convert/classic. It is advised that you make room for possible currency fluctuations in your estimation.

Why should you use Oanda.com
1. It gives you accurate and reliable foreign exchange rate
2. It saves you a lot in cost
3. It is used by the UK home office for estimation

Question 3: How would I know how much money I need to show the UK Home Office as payment for my fees?

Answer:

CAS: Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies
The initial year of your course's tuition is included in the total you'll see on your CAS. Your CAS will include a full breakdown of course costs if the duration of your program is 12 months or less.
If you want to study in the UK, you won't be able to get a visa until you can prove that you can cover your living expenses and the full cost of your education, as outlined in your CAS letter.
There will be a notation on your CAS indicating how much of your tuition deposit you have paid if you have already done so. This is a reduction from the total proof of maintenance costs you must provide.
If you want to study in the UK, you'll have to prove to the UK Home Office that you can pay for the rest of your tuition, plus £9,207. If you have paid any money toward your tuition or housing, it must be reflected on your CAS. It is not possible to change your CAS after submitting your visa application.

If you are expected to pay a sum of £11k for the first year and you have made a down payment of £4000. It means you have £7k left for your tuition fees plus the required £9207 for the entire 9 months duration to get £16207. You will then refer to oanda.com to get the conversion in Naira.

Question 4: Will my visa application have a better chance of being approved if I pay all of my tuition costs in advance, before I receive my CAS?
Answer:

Full tuition payment in advance does not ensure a visa will be issued. The quantity you need to prove in order to pass the "maintenance test" is only reduced. The evidence you provide will be used to determine your visa application.

Question 5: Will the money I put toward a place to stay be taken into account?
Answer:

You can show that you have the funds necessary to cover your living expenses by using a portion of the money you used to pay for your university housing before you submitted your visa application. Payments for university housing up to the maximum allowable amount of £1,334 can be used as proof of maintenance. The UK Home Office will only deduct £1,334 from your living costs (£9,207) if you pay more than £1,334 per month for housing. This means you will need to produce £7,873 for your living expenses.
