2023: Ekwunife loses, as court affirms Umeh as LP candidate

Tony Okafor, Awka

The Court of Appeal, Awka has affirmed Senator Victor Umeh as candidate of the Labour Party for Anambra Central Senatorial District for Saturday's polls.

The Court in its judgement held that the suit which supposedly disqualified Umeh at the Federal High Court, Awka was statute barred and lacked locus.

Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, who read the judgement via zoom allowed the two appeals by the Labour Party and Senator Umeh to stand.

Mr Surajo Gusau, the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court confirmed the judgement to our correspondent.

Recall that Ekwunife and PDP had gone to the Federal High Court, Awka, to contest the validity of Umeh’s nomination in the Labour Party.

The court below presided over by Justice Hyeladzira Nganjiwa in his judgement on January 27 granted Ekwunife's petition and disqualified Umeh.

The LP and Umeh through their counsel Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) and Patrick Ikwetoh( SAN) respectively appealed the trial Court Judgement for lack of locus by the respondents and prayed the court to set aside the judgement.

Umeh is LP’s candidate for Anambra Central, the Senatorial District of Mr Peter Obi, one of the frontline presidential candidates in the February. 25 elections.

Reacting to the judgment, Chief Beluolisa Nwofor, SAN, counsel for Ekwunife said he will appeal the judgment.

Ekwunife would have to work extra hard to return to the senate. Unfortunately, she is from the same district as Obi, which makes it look like going thru the eye of the needle.

Exactly,

The next 24 hours is going to be crucial

It's party internal affair. The appellate court has warned several against this. PDP and Uche Ekwunife are meddlesome interlopers.

The person I quoted was alluding that Ekwunife and Umeh are both of Labour, that either way the judgement went, Labour still has a candidate.

Their unity is their streingth. When it comes to what will favour their region they unanimously hurry personal interest something a southerner especially a south easterner cannot try.

The North power brokers are currently with Tinubu.

Forget the old intel you had about the North. If it was the previous North, the APC governors would have decamped to Atiku side openly.

But you have a North where the whole ulamas and traditional leaders in a state are unanimously declaring for a southern Tinubu. That speaks volume.

If you think say e easy, try make your candidate do am.

Not everyone in the north oh,just some sections in pdp.even if he steps down,it might not change anything because in 2019 he was in pdp and supported atiku.his supporters dominated atiku rallies but in the end, buhari trashed him like he trashed gej.kwankwaso and his supporters do not like atiku obviously

That's why she is pursuing the disqualification route to remove Umeh completely from the ballot else Labour party is winning the senatorial election

Don't delude yourself that Tinubu will get more Northern support than Atiku.

He will be lucky to get up to 25% of the votes cast in the NW and NE combined.
