The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, has said it is clear that the electoral process as a whole on February 25 failed to meet Nigerians’ expectations.

Leonard stated this in an op-ed released on Sunday morning and made available to Daily Sun in Abuja by the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria.

Leonard said: “The people of Nigeria demonstrated their dedication to democracy on February 25, but there are many angry and frustrated Nigerians as well as many who are celebrating victories they believe were hard-fought and well-earned.

In the coming days, it will be important for the future of this country that Nigerians not let their differences divide them, and that the legally established process for resolving challenges to the election be allowed to take its course. We commend Mr. Obi and Mr. Abubakar for their recent statements committing to take this path, and Mr. Tinubu, who INEC declared the president-elect under Nigeria’s electoral framework, for acknowledging their right to do so.

The United States is no stranger to election-related controversy and conflict. As much as it can be unsatisfying to end an electoral process in a courtroom, in a constitutional democracy bound by the rule of law, that is where electoral conflicts may appropriately conclude.

“It is clear that the electoral process as a whole on February 25 failed to meet Nigerians’ expectations. As I said numerous times prior to the elections, Nigeria has accomplished much in just the two-plus decades since the return to democracy, and a gradual improvement in the quality of its elections in that time constitutes one of those accomplishments.”

Leonard further said the United States recognised that Nigerians want that positive trend to continue, including through the use of new technology intended to make the process of reporting results more transparent.

We thus reiterate our call on INEC to address promptly the challenges that can be resolved ahead of the March 11 gubernatorial elections, and to undertake a broader review of the problems that transpired during the last elections and what can be done to fix them. In all cases, INEC should share with the Nigerian public information about the actions it is taking.

“I also want to highlight some of the remarkable results from this past election that show how Nigeria’s political landscape is indisputably changing. In more than half of the states – 20 – the winning candidate represented a different party than that of the incumbent governor. Twelve of these states are led by APC governors. For the first time, four presidential candidates won at least one state, and the top three each won 12 states based on these initial results. In the National Assembly elections, even with results still incomplete, we already know that changes are afoot: seven sitting governors lost in their attempts to win election to the Assembly; the Labor Party has won at least seven seats in the Senate; the NNPP has won at least 11 seats in the House of Representatives.

The Nigerian people have made clear their desire for responsive and inclusive governance, and we strongly support their ability to express that desire. The United States and Nigeria are the two largest presidential democracies in the world, and long-time partners. As Nigeria goes through these next weeks and months, we stand with you,” Leonard stated.

The whole world knows that what happened in Nigeria was "Cash and carry" elections that handed over a certificate to a predetermined candidate, in complete negation of the will of the masses.

I think INEC and the ruling class underestimated the resolve of young Nigerians to have a workable country, presided over by a transparent president who is ready to solve problems, and answer questions.

Peter Obi is the choice of the masses, and the whole people of Nigeria voted for him massively, forget about the altered results that will be upturned in court.

Agbado is being roundly rejected but his urchins will tell you otherwise. The US has rejected him. No wonder Biden and other important world leaders are yet to send congratulatory messages, they know that INEC colluded with the old KLEPTOMANIAC and declared him winner against the wishes of the people. The plan was to first declare Ojuyobo as the winner, then ask other people to go to court. That was why the INEC chairman vehemently refused to stop collating results despite the failure of the IRev and all the damning evidences presented to him at the collation center!

Thank you jare. They'd have wanted nothing better than a puppet they can use. I cannot just wrap my head around how a monumental failure at state level can be trusted with handling federal affairs if not some scheme by the west using social media to brainwash the many halfwits that can never identify as true patriots.

If someone cannot judge two or three presidential candidates by track record, then the person should probably donate his/her brain to medical school for intending brain surgeons

Why hasn't Russia and China acknowledged Baba agbado? Are they also part of the "west"? Even countries like Germany, Canada, NOBODY has congratulated this fraud except the UK who are the chief architect of Nigeria's failure.

The whole world knows that what happened in Nigeria last week was NOT an election and the truth is beginning to come out. Presidents even get dragged by their own people for acknowledging Thiefnubuu, yet you think he will keep that seat. Don't worry, he will soon return that certificate of return 🤣🤣🤣

One fact I know is Tinubu will not be President of Nigeria.
The new Nigeria is not one with a fraudulent electoral mandate.
He is wasting his time. Heavy shame is all over him. The walls around him are shattered.
Tinubu has more hope for prison than being president.

APC and INEC can't get away with it.

Anyhow they want it, we will match them.

We obidient are observing..our movement go be like Arab nation..we upper boys in Benin city are preparing already...tinubu know as our matter dey be for Bini once we start tinubu nor go fit drink water drop cup

Inec is useless..the real results is coming out gradually

I'm from Edo state..Tinubu will never become the president
Tinubu didn't get 25 percent from Edo, rivers, lagos, Benue, akwa ibom and so many other states
Inec think we are fools

Every sane Nigeria should look at this and read a meaning to it
1) Tinubu political party and administration is ruling but he was unable to win Abuja where them sit down put
2) his own state of origin osun. Even a twelve year old will win thier own state yet he was unable to win

3) all development in lagos is attributed to Tinubu and he is regarded as the father of lagos yet he was unable to win

Nigerians should put on thier conscience and see that tinubu was rejected completely by Nigerians

If you can't handover your daughter or sister to a man who is old and sick with dementia, who is not mentally and physically strong. Someone not aware of his environment

But you supported the same man to head over 220 million Nigerians at this critical time of our nation suitation then may you and your children know no peace

In a sane society, Mahmood Yakubu would honourably resign his appointment as the INEC Chairman. In Nigeria, we die there!
