Lagos Was Owned By The British For 99 Years - Rufai Oseni Shares Treaty Cession Document (Photo)

Arise TV News presenter and author, Rufai Oseni has added his voice to the recent tribal arguments amongst Lagosians over the 'ownership' of Lagos State, IGBERETV reports.

The argument got intense following the campaign of Labour Party's Lagos gubernatorial aspirant, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour whose mother is Igbo. Also, Labour Party's presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi who is from Anambra state won Lagos State in the just concluded presidential poll against former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu.

In a tweet on Wednesday, March 15, Oseni said Lagos was a British colony until it was ceded to a Lagos Monarch

He went on to state that some of the developments in the state were made by the British. He also shared a photo showing the treaty cessation document between the then British government and Oba Dosunmu.

Oseni refused to acknowledge the positions that "Lagos is no man's land," or that "it is a Yoruba land".

He wrote;

"This Land called Lagos was owned by the British for 99years, from 1861-1960….Most of the initial development was done by the British."

"A Colony 1. a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country and occupied by settlers from that country. Lagos was a British Colony!"
https://twitter.com/ruffydfire/status/1635857404176011265?t=LmbjWPpSTpMP-8Lawby3qg&s=19

"Up till 1960, Most Lagosians were British Subjects. On Independence most of them opted to Join the Nigeria Federation, they could have got British passports if they wanted."
https://twitter.com/ruffydfire/status/1635857052630220803?t=zA7IaHxl42hmfzsTHjnwtw&s=19

"The Treaty of Cession, 6 August 1861 or the Lagos Treaty of Cession was a treaty between the British Empire and Oba Dosunmu of Lagos (spelt 'Docemo' in English documents)"

This is Lagos island not Lagos State.

Just like Oyo state is different from Oyo town.

Enugu town is different from Enugu state

Lagos State is a Creation of the Nigerian military government.

By the way, there is nothing contentious in saying Lagos State is Yoruba land.

The whole of Nigeria once belonged to Royal Niger company as a private property. It doesn't mean there were no indigenous Hasuas in Kano or indigenous Igbos in Anambra at that time.

Very deep insight from oseni, a man I respect for his stands on issues.

Lagos is not a no man's land.
Lagos is not a yoruba land.
Lagos has its indigenous people who are the binis and aworis.

Every other person is either a lagosian by birth , marriage or an emigrant.
Any other thing is bull shit.

It's only Lagos island that is called Lagos until today.

The rest of Lagos has a name.

The first colonial masters or owners were the Binis!

We are all emigrants because even those laying claims emigrated from somewhere.

Rufai doesn't know that the Lagos colonoy/protectorate included the majority of Ogun state and Oyostate in it?

Your Rufai doesn't know that there are similar treaties across Africa between colonial masters and indigenous people of the colonies in the colonial period?

Rufai doesn't Know Lagos State is different from Lagos island?

The Lagos state included

Majority of Lagos mainland, Ikorodu, Badagry and Epe that were never part of Lagos island or FCT intial plan by the colonial maters.

This Rufai is beginning to sound like an illiterate.
Does he even know the meaning of a colony?

By Rufai's logic Britain still "own" Nigeria and by extension every other country it colonised.

Hong Kong was under British rule for 136 years(1841 to 1997) that did not automatically
make it a British or no man's land.

BTW, Oba Dosunmu was one of the several kings ruling parts of Lagos then.

As to the British development he is talking about, let him name one surviving example of that.

Eko is not a village or a specific location.

Outside idumota area of Lagos given to the bini people by Aromire sub-clan of Awori, there's no place one can find bini traces in Lagos.

By the way, majority of these so called "binis" like Kosoko, Obanikoro, Eletu will stone you if you call them anything but Yorubas today.

First it was Bini, now it's British; later it's going to be Biafra. This Rufai and his station need psychiatric examination. He's been looking for anything 'B' to own Lagos and anything to trend on twitter.

He doesn't even know the difference between Lagos State and Lagos colony, which is less than 10% of present Lagos state. In his efforts to keep downgrading Lagos indigenous people, he has been promoting fringe individuals that came to Lagos island: Prince Ado, the slave masters (Britons), and the returnees like Saros. He forgot Prince Ado met Already established kingdom of Awori-Yorubas. The colonizers also met Yoruba kings kosoko and Dosunmu and their people in Lagos Island.
