Ekweremadu, Wife and Middle man Doctor found guilty of Organ Trafficking in the UK

Senator Ike Ekweremadu was found guilty of the organ-trafficking plot

By Tom Symonds at the Old Bailey & Samantha Jagger
BBC News - 23 March 2023

A senior wealthy Nigerian politician, his wife and a medical "middleman" have been found guilty of an organ-trafficking plot, after they brought a 21-year-old man to the UK from Lagos.

Senator Ike Ekweremadu, 60, his wife Beatrice, 56, and Dr Obinna Obeta, 50, were convicted of conspiring to exploit the man for his kidney, in the first such case under modern slavery laws.

The Old Bailey heard the organ was for the couple's daughter, Sonia, aged 25.

She was cleared of the same charge.

The victim, a street trader from Lagos, was brought to the UK last year to provide a kidney in an £80,000 private transplant at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

The prosecution said he was offered up to £7,000 and promised opportunities in the UK for helping, and that he only realised what was going on when he met doctors at the hospital.

It was alleged the defendants had tried to convince medics at the Royal Free by pretending he was the cousin of Sonia, who has a debilitating illness, when they were not related.

While it is lawful to donate a kidney, it becomes criminal if there is a reward of money or other material advantage.

Beatrice Ekweremadu was involved in the plot to exploit the 21-year-old man for his kidney

When he was rejected as unsuitable, the court heard the Ekweremadus transferred their interest to Turkey and set about finding another donor.

An investigation was launched after the young man ran away from London and slept rough for days before walking into a police station in Staines, in Surrey, crying and in distress.

The Ekweremadus, who have an address in Willesden Green, north-west London, and Dr Obeta, from Southwark, south London, denied the charge against them.

It is the first time that defendants have been convicted under the Modern Slavery Act of an organ-trafficking conspiracy.

Sentencing is set to take place on 5 May.

What baffles me about our mindset in Nigeria is that we feel that we are special and that best practices from civilized countries can be ignored by Nigeria 'cos such best practices do not apply to us because Nigeria is that special ?

What did Boris Johnson even do that warranted him being kicked out as prime minister (a charge led by members of his own party and a cabinet he appointed).

He attended a party in downing street where he both works and lives during lock down and he was adjudged to have lied about it and for just misleading parliament he was removed as prime minister and his appearance on televised camera at yesterdays party-gate enquiry in parliament where he had to hold the Bible and swear under oath to tell the truth about the lockdown parties means that if he is found guilty of lying, though he may not go to jail, 'cos the enquiry is not a proper court, it may mark the end of his political career.

Don't forget that the former chairman of the UK Conservative Party - Renowned author Jeffrey Archer - once went to jail for 4 years for Perjury - lying under oath in a case he brought against a tabloid newspaper that exposed that he slept with a prostitute and he took them to court and was found guilty of lying under oath in court and he was jailed for 4 years and actually spent 2 years in prison - 'cos he actually slept with the prostitute and this was not his crime. His crime was lying about it in court under oath and Jeffrey Archer was a top member of the British establishment at the time he was jailed for just lying in court and being a top member of the British establishment could not save him from jail time. !!!

He was jailed for lying in court 14 years earlier !!!!!

On 19 July 2001, Jeffrey Archer was found guilty of perjury and perverting the course of justice at a 1987 trial in a court case he had brought against the tabloids. He was sentenced to four years' imprisonment.

Jeffrey Archer's mother had died shortly before he was sentenced and he was released from prison just for 1 day to attend his Mums funeral.

Until we in Nigeria start demanding, expecting and holding the kleptocratic Nigerian politicians to the same high standards that civilised countries use to judge their politicians, we may not see a good Nigeria in our lifetime.

And whilst we are at it, we should all gang up and condemn criminality whenever we find it in our unrepentantly greed politicians because without this critical mass of people CONSTANTLY and RELENTLESSLY dragging our heartless politicians for their wrong doings, Nigeria becoming good may be an impossible pipe dream if things are allowed to continue like it currently is.

We can NOT plant corn and expect to harvest bananas.

Its about time in Nigeria that we start copying best practices from around the civilized world so that we can give our children a fighting chance in life.

The alternative if we do nothing is to see ourselves as second class citizens / slaves / servants to these heartless Nigerian politicians, their wives and children and their hangers on.

They really are, lol. It's first thing on BBC News. And I guess they should since they'd want us Nigerians to hear and learn just as you've suggested above.
