my take... John the Baptist had the mantle of Elijah!! finctioned in the manner and Spirit-like Elijah... But he is not Elijah

John was already dead at Matthew 14. Jesus himself said Elijah is John the Baptist. But what is not correct is the lie that Elijah came back to be put to deat so he can go to heaven. Infact OP where did you get this lie from.

According to the prophecy of Malachi, GOD said;
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:”

According to Jesus Christ, the clincher is that while Elijah was removed from his former timeline right as King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were set to take their revenge on him for killing their prophets among other things, as John, his old life caught up with him as he was executed by the King and Queen still.

John the baptist is Elijah, for he came in the spirit of Elijah, the very spirit of Elijah. Is there any difference between the spirit of Peter and Peter? Spirit of Paul and Paul? Remember Elisha received double portion of Elijah's spirit, but he did not become Elijah, but Elijah came as John.

John the baptist is not Elijah , he is only figuratively called Elijah due to their mode of dressing

The real Elijah would come before the dreadful day of the Lord.
