Policemen have arrested a Point of Sale operator who reportedly went on a spending spree after N280m was erroneously transferred to his account by a commercial bank.

The POS operator identified as Alfa Rafiu was arrested by the police on Monday in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect is a resident of the Akuji compound, the Abayawo area in the Ilorin West Local Government Area of the state.

According to sources in the area familiar with the issue, Rafiu went on a spending spree after he received the alerts in batches some weeks back.

But instead of him to draw the attention of the bank that mistakenly transferred the huge fund, he went on a spending spree.

“Rafiu bought houses, and cars and sponsored people to lesser Hajj. Although he was generous to several people in the community, some residents were surprised about his sudden wealth as a POS operator
,” one of the sources said.

It was further gathered that the bank auditors later discovered the error and sent law enforcement agents after Rafiu who was arrested and moved to Lagos.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident.

“His arrest was carried out by the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department from Alagbon-Close, Ikoyi, Lagos which makes it out of our jurisdiction,” Okasanmi said.

The bank staff who made the erroneous transfer should be arrested as well. There is no mistake when it comes to transferring such humongous amounts.

The reason he sponsored some people to lesser Hajj.

So he must have said in his heart:
1) Allah (SAW) has remembered me
2) This is election season, I believe this is my share.
3) This must be a reward for my diligence in this POS business.

LESSONS
1) be careful of breakthroughs that are too sudden. If it's from God, it'll bring peace of mind
2) ..... Oya add yours

If the money was transferred to a more knowledgeable crook, then over is over. He for don change the money buy plenty dollars and bitcoin, then transfer some back to his mum (Hakimi option) through the aboki or other third party, thus leaving no direct trail between his account and the recipient, then used the bulk of his loot to japa through night bus to Ghana or Cotonou and from there onwards onwards to a new life. He would have weeks to perfect this.

You can't arrest folks for mistakes.that fall under job incompetence. At worst you sack them. What the POS operator did is criminal and he was rightly arrested.

If can happen. Last year I accidentally sent 600k to the wrong person. Bank said the recipient must go and initiate a reversal.

Luckily they called him and he is an old guy. Not very mobile anymore in fact , and it took him time, but he still went to the bank to do as requested

Restored my belief in the goodness of Nigerians at least for a day lol. Sent the old man 100k as a thank you even as I doubt he needs it.

More like 99%. Severe hardship will do that to a people. He still committed a crime though so he has to pay unfortunately.

Bro, such a wonderful man. The bank had told me his account had not been active for ages and that he was above 80.

Per the amount involved they actually phoned him while I was in the branch and he was not even aware of any credit to his account.

The man explained he did not go out much but would call his driver to take him to the bank to authorise the reversal on his end.

Even felt guilty for troubling the old man. I think bank called him Tuesday. He went to the bank Thursday.

The older generation are much better than our hushpuppi generation today like the chap advising how to japa with the money. Very worrying for Nigeria sha. They are all worse than Peter Obi. Lol.

The POS agent is not intelligent at all....

First, move the money into a crypto wallet, untraceable....

Then relocate and close down the business...

Move out of that city to another city to start life.

Change name and get a new BVN, take a teen boy that has your resemblance to the BVN center and he will be captured with the new name and will capture for you, get a new phone number and link 5he new BVN to it ... Open a new account and start a new life.....

Convert the crypto back to cash and begin to enjoy your millions by investing it in a serious real estate business..

Hahahahahahahaha .

Is Alfa his first name or that he is Alfa as a cleric? Assuming but not conceding that he is a cleric, it is a very big shame on him. He probably would have as a cleric been acting holier than thou, telling his followers the need for uprightness in their dealings always.

That’s the Nigeria where we find ourselves, with corrupt leaders and citizens. A country where crooks in power are eulogized and given more time to continue mercilessly impoverishing the people. The crooked citizens too, who choose peanuts as bribes on election days, while offering their lives and blood in exchange to perpetuate their slave masters in power.

In all, this greedy fellow, who criminally converted the wrongly transferred sum, would vomit all that he purchased illegitimately and go to jail. All those who he sponsored to Mecca would return bearing titles of “Alhajis” and “Alhajas”, legitimately. They would never be part of his travails or prison experience. He probably has never been to Mecca and would remain with an inglorious name all his life. The cars, houses and balance in the bank would be forcefully recovered, with some beatings added to reset his irresponsible and stupid brain.

This certainly was not a Ramadan breakthrough. It was a very big test of his faith and belief during the fasting period. He woefully failed the simple test and certainly would serve the punishment associated with his thieving character.

I discovered that some old generation bank accounts share same account number with OPay accounts , but different names. I almost made similar transfer error, if not for final scrutiny. Always do a final check before you confirm any transfer

280 million naira you are not expecting is paid into your account and you think that is a "breakthrough"?

In which nation on Earth will that be seen as God's benevolence but Nigeria where, from Pastor/imam to congregation members, everyone is a crook?

Notifying the bank would have saved him this headache...He should have done the right thing for peace of mind undecided

The bank staff should also be arrested because they could have used Alfa to launder money or they could have caused a bigger damage with their incompetence
