It's only when something bad happens that we react in this Nigeria. Before it happens, we don't react. Now there has been a lot of massive corruption going on in the offices of the Lagos State Building Control Agency as approvals are given arbitrarily. Even when they ask the developer to stop, he still finds a way to bribe his way through by greasing some palms so that work can continue, then before you can say Jack Robinson, the building caves in. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria and relevant agencies needs to wake up to their responsibilities. Do they check building materials, to see if they are authentic or not. So many substandard products being imported into the country without checks for standard and all. Everyone claims to be working, rather they go to work to wait for the end of the month to collect salary and also collect bribe if possible. Nigeria is a systemic failure. And Nigerians love to cut corners. It's just inside our DNA. Every Nigerian needs cognitive reconditioning because we are so used to 'business as usual' in this country. At the end of the day, we blame the government for our woes. Meanwhile it's one Nigerian who went to important substandard building material o, and one government official collected bribe to pass it through. See we are the problems of ourselves, I've said it time and time again.

LASBCA is the most corruption department under LANDS in Lagos State.

They are so corruption, that they can't even denied it.

LASBCA is under Physical Planning Ministry not Lands Bureau.
Corruption is everywhere so stop being specific.
Most building collapse is as a result of shoddy builders work. The professional architect, structural engineer will design a building to specs but the quack builder contracted will use substandard materials to build.
You'll see concrete more sand than cement.
Iron rods for reinforcement as thin as your pinkie finger for casting.
LASBCA is going all they can but we can't be everywhere at once.
Most times even when they check a building and serve notices . Builders flagrantly ignore it and keep working. With few officers covering vast areas with high density building population.. a few bad buildings will slip thru the cracks.
We should all help in fighting this.
Owners. Please just don't pay money to developers and go to sleep .. monitor the work or better still employ qualified structural Engineers to supervise your site.

Its bin long this kin powerful thunder don strike in Lagos, it was scary shocked

If lightening and thunder should collapse a building under construction then it's a big problem. If coincidentally an earthquake of low magnitude hits lagos then atleast 90% of the houses in the whole of Lagos is going down.

Okay! But LASBCA is extremely corrupt.

Any new building in Lagos State that collapse just blame those guys. They don't even do any inspection on buildings.

All they do is walk into any new site, bill them, if you don't pay their money on time, they cross- out your building and wait for you come and pay.

They don't even care if the building is illegal or not.

Nonsense! The stop work notice was not for building or construction integrity but rather revenue and extortion from the sea of roaming omonile in the state.

Let's forget the govt for now.
Two things come into play:

1) client always wanting best price (cheap price) thereby allowing contractor to use cheap materials based on clients budget.

2) client paid handsomely and the crooked contractor used cheap materials.

As for me, in my field. I don't do cheap jobs, once I give u my quote and you can't afford it, bye bye. There is alsways that peace when you use quality materials for your clients. That's the peace I embrace.

You are right it's almost always either of your 2 points.

Everything people know is to blame govt.

Builders ignore notices and always continue building.

Those developers have contributed a whole lot to this problem in a bid to maximize profit.

Bricklayer will mix wrongly in rder to steal cememt, iron rod size has reduced in diameter every damn material is now substandard.

The problem is multifaceted honestly.

Why should they be blamed? Don't blame Lasbaca(though they have their own for bodi too oo) blame the Nigerians who cut corners in construction, if corners are not being cut all these issues won't occur.

I am not a construction expert but I have seen where these guy's brought one equipment like that and placed on the building to check the structural integrity.

Is it their fault if the builders didn't build according to standard or what was approved.
The most they can do is mark the building.

I saw a house a storey building tilted to one side, Lasbaca marked it as distressed, guess what Nigerians are still living there, they now put pillars again grin, that house will fall in due time and if people are there they will still blame govt.

Also blame our big men, most of these issues are beyond the lasbaca officers on the road, one call here and there and the matter might die not until it collapses.

For the governor to be the one to give the order to demolish some buildings in Banana Island tells a whole lot. Are you saying the lasbaca officials didn't know or see all these.

It's the system, we run a weak and corrupt system in this country and when systems are not in place or ineffective issues like these will continue to occur.

Circumventing building regulations meant to prevent events like this is penny-wise-pound foolish. Hopefully no lives were lost in addition to money wasted due to this collapse.

The failure was as a result of the error in structural design or refusal to carryout the construction according to the structural design..

Mind you I'm a structural engineer that can handle your building designs and construction.
