Some Yet-To-Be-Identified number of persons may have been trapped as a five-storey building under construction collapsed at Basden Street, Fegge, in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was gathered that the building, meant to serve commercial purposes on completion, collapsed in the early hours of Sunday while some of the construction workers were on the last floor.

An excavator has quickly been moved to the site to begin the evacuation of rubbles and possible rescue operations of any trapped victims.

The reason for the collapse has not yet been ascertained but as of the time of filing this report on Sunday, a source near the area said one person has been rescued as rescue operations continue at the site.

However, details of the incident are still sketchy as the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for confirmation.

He did not respond to enquiries on his telephone as of the time of filing this report.

The Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Chinyere Nworah, has yet to respond to enquiries sent to her telephone.

Lord have mercy; all these wicked developers responsible for such buildings should be tried and jailed for lengthy periods. Imagine if he had completed and rented this out to unsuspecting merchants and it comes down while fully occupied and functioning 😡😡😡

When you mix concrete with poor aggregate ratio, use steel bars that are not suitable, poor foundation depth, all in a bid to save cost; future disasters like this one are certain.

It was during the high cost of cement, that the labourers started with the poor aggregate ratio but i can bet you the contractor did a well benefitting job during the foundation..

Onitsha is known for 7 story buildings.

Engineers always hiding cement and using sand to cover up is always one of the causes.

hmm. Them too like skyscraper that way. Its a message of wealth. 6/7 storey building na their trademark. When the late asagba come see as them dey rush come asaba to build houses, he come say make no person build house that was more than 2 storey. As we speak na the limit of 2 storey all of them dey build full asaba, not one storey .meaning, if they have the permit, they will build their 7 storey full here

Nothing is wrong with Onitsha, a house collapsed just as it collapses in and around Nigeria, as well as other part of the world.
