Let's learn......
Refusing to sign the war deal with Russia thinking his father's wealth and Igbo people's fearlessness was enough to win the war.

If Ojukwu had signed whatever agreement USSR gave him back then, believe me, Biafra would have won cos Biafra lost mainly because of hunger and lack of air power which the British, Russia, Egypt, etc helped Nigeria to dominate the air by bombarding most Eastern towns using Egyptian and other foreign trained pilots.

This was Ojukwu's greatest mistake

He lost the war purely on the basis of unpreparedness...

He could have built an overwhelming dose of armament before making the declaration for secession.

Something as short as six months could have enabled him to train enough men in the art of soldiery.

Most of the troops were conscripts who had zero training in warfare.

He was also not exactly swift to get a foreign backer...
Biafra was winning in land combat, Nigeria dominated the air via intensive air bombardments, all thanks to Britain, Egypt and USA that supplied Nigerian side with fighter jets and foreign pilots.

Another thing is, Nigeria had ecomonic advantage over Biafra such that when Awolowo brought the idea of currency change, it became difficult for Biafran government to import food for the Biafran side, which led to mass starvation of Biafran side including the soldiers and this began to demoralize the Biafran soldiers who were fighting on empty stomach and also hearing news of their family members dying of kwashiokor due to hunger made many Biafran soldiers to start turning to saboteurs revealing classified Biafran military information to the Nigerian side in exchange for food

Biafra won most of all its military operations and had to surrender to stop deaths as a result of starvation. I have read most foreign declassified accounts of the war and there nothing meaningful Nigeria military could do in the battle field aside blockade, sabotaging farms , starvation of women and children.

Midwest invasion successful within 12 hours Midwest was taken cleanly. Ore invasion was successful without hassles, the delay between taking Ore and matching to Lagos was the biggest blunder in military operations worse than the delay the mistake the German War machine made in taking Moscow and was the turning point of the war

Ojukwu declared Biafra in May 67. Biafra invaded midwest in September and declared it a Republic and installed new Governor Okonkwo. From when they crossed Niger into Asaba and entered Benin they met zero opposition from Federal forces. Absence of Federal troops was by design. Gowon was ok with Ojukwu keeping his Biafra. Infact, Northerners were putting plans in place to vacate their soldiers from Southern barracks and return them North. The coup of Jan 66 caught them off guard and they were ready to take their losses and return home, afterall they had exacted their pound of flesh from Ibos, the score was even.

The invasion and declaration of minority regions in East and midwest changed course of the conflict.

Biafra captured Benin on September 19th without any opposition, but by next day, on 20th, Gowon dispatched troops to free all captured territories. This is where exchange of fire with Federal troops started. Infact, by next day Biafran soldiers were already in Ore, advancing West. Federal soldiers neutralized them there, then pushed Eastward forcing Biafrans to retreat.

In a nutshell, invasion of non-Ibo territories gave Gowon a resolve to launch an offensive against Biafra. If Ojukwu had not strayed, greedily, claiming non-ibo lands 2million biafrans would not have perished, and there would be a internationally recognized sovereingty today called Republic of Biafra, with a seat in UN.

Maybe you think we still rely on oral narrations to verify historical accounts.

Your narrative is repugnant.

The counter coup happened in July 1966. The pogroms began in May. Northern officers were leading the massacre of Igbos while Ironsi was still the Head of State. The pogroms petered off in September 1966.

Ojukwu waited a year from the start of the '66 pogroms to secede. This was primarily because Gowon wasn't willing to entertain a confederation. Ojukwu was willing to move past the pogroms. Meanwhile Gowon was finalizing plans to centralize power and balkanize the Eastern region so it lost oil wealth within the areas populated by Eastern minorities.

Contrary to your postulation, it was Gowon that instituted a blockade before hostilities began. He also launched the first offensive on 6 July, 1967 to forcibly retake secessionist territories.

The offensive launched by Ojukwu was mainly a feint to tie up federal troops on a more favorable Western front. By the time Ojukwu launched this offensive on 9 August, 1967; Gowon had already captured Biafran territories like Nsukka and Ogudu on the Northern front.

Seccessions are tricky. Unfortunately, Ojukwu was the wrong man at the right moment. Eritrea dunked on Ethiopia during their War of Independence despite having a much smaller population. Ojukwu should have had his ducks in a row before pushing to secede. The UK had already given Gowon carte blanche. US deferred to UK on the conflict. The Nigerian side initially had reservations about the Soviet Union, yet Ojukwu could not pounce and secure a diplomatic breakthrough. And that was after failing to convince Britain to back his effort as there's evidence the Brits dithered before committing to Nigeria.

He had most of the oil. He had a coastline. He had a direct land bridge with France through Francophone West Africa and the French were willing to back Biafra like they backed the US against Britain. Heck the oil majors led by Shell were willing to do business with him.

Unfortunately, he could not convince any other major power with the resources to back a prolonged war effort. US, UK, Soviet Union + the entire Muslim World were on the side of Nigeria. Whatever was going through Ojukwu's mind, it is clear that he did not make adequate preparation to match his lofty ambitions. Consequently, he pretty much extended the death and suffering of the Igbos way after the pogroms had ceased.

From a vantage point, the Igbos played into the hands of the Fulanis. Every trap they laid had a huge catch. The Fulanis and the British were playing chess while Ojukwu and the Igbos were playing checkers. Sixty years on, they still are.

NigerianAngelo:
1. Agriculture. Even Hitler had food for Germans throughout the war till the last day.
Ojukwu didn't plant, didn't harness. He should have known food is the first bullet.

2. Lack of cooperation with Cameroon. Your only neighbour, you couldn't cooperate with. This enabled encirclement and starvation from May 1968 (1 yr).

3. Lack of LG Chairmen. They would have coordinated Biafra at grassroot level and given it a lot of legitimacy, man power coordination and civil strenght at grassroot level it needed.

4. Low military numbers. At peak of war, Biafra had just 90k soldiers, for a country arguably with 12M+ pop. By contrast, by the end of WWII Germany had mobilised 14M soldiers out of 70M citizens, and US 16M out of about 200M+.
Biafra should have mobilised 500k+ soldiers, trained them, and foreign aid groups plus local efforts could have armed them instead of just civilian food relief efforts. The Biafra could have stood and larger territories (Rivers, Delta, Cross River) never allowed under foreign occupations.

is it by the number of Soldiers? here is a quote by Taffy Williams about Biafran Soldiers that worked with him . Biafra did not surrender because of any Battle field strength of the Nigerian Military , Biafra surrendered to keep the death rate low from starvation of women and children, Nigeria Military even with foreign backing cannot match Biafra Military any day on the battle field , Know this and Know peace

Taffy Williams speaking of his Biafran subordinates, "I've seen a lot of Africans at war. But there's nobody to touch these people. Give me 10,000 Biafrans for six months, and we'll build an army that would be invincible on this continent. I've seen men die in this war who would have won the Victoria Cross in another context

Gowon sent Soldiers to capture Ojukwu in Enugu and Umuahia Biafra's Capital, is it not equally fair that Ojukwu send troops to capture Gowon in Lagos as he was staying in Nigeria's Capital shoudl he have sent troops to Kaduna or Jos . what kind of reasoning is this , if you were not supportive of the North wh did you allow Gowon to use lagos as the base of his Military meetings , strategy and war campaign mobilization

It was Ojukwu and his useless Biafra that first Bombed Lagos in an Air attack on July 19 1967

Yaba Cinema, and several Locations on Lagos Island were bombed

Biafra also invaded the Midwest on the 9 th August 1967

The invasion of the Of Nsukka and Enugu by the very Reluctant Federal troops didn’t begin until the 12 of September 1967

The mistake you make is thinking that Ojukwu wanted war, that was the last thing Ojukwu wanted, but that was the only option he was forced into

What many Nigerians dont seem to understand is that Nigeria was once made up of 4 Regions that controlled their resources, and were not dependent on the federal government the way most of the 36 states of Nigeria are today

The Regions controlled their resources during the Ojukwus time m, thats why Gowon, despite claiming to me military ruler of Nigeria, had to meet Ojukwu who was military Governor of the Eastern Region, in Aburi, Ghana, for talks

Ojukwu went to Aburi to find peace, he signed a peace agreement with Gowon at Aburi, only for Gowon to return to Nigeria and break the agreement, causing war

Ojukwu was controlling the Eastern Region and its resources, which included oil

Had the international community stayed neutral, Ojukwu would have been able to sell oil and finance the war appropriately

The international community was the only reason Nigeria won

Lies from the pit of hell.
A man who boasted that Biafran army will defeat the whole of African Army, is fully prepared for war.
Go and look for Philip Asiodu's interview, Ojukwu lost because he thought war was a walk in the park.
According to Philip Asiodu, over 85% of Ojukwu's demand was already met and still Ojukwu prefer war.
Go and look for the interview how over confidence ruined Ojukwu's Biara.
For your information, Philip Asiodu was the government representative discussing with Ojukwu.

France,

Ivory Coast
Portugal
South Africa
Gabon
Haiti

Zambia

Without support from any where, Biafra wont last 2 weeks.
Gowon even advised the Nigerian army to take it easy, that they are fighting their brothers.

Interview is only about listening to someone elses view, which could be a lie

The fact remains that Ojukwu and Gowon signed an agreement in Ghana to avoid a looming war. Yes Gowon did implement some of what was agreed, but scrapped the entire agreement within 4 months with Decree 14 where he abolished all 4 Regions and created 12 states to replace them. Yet the Aburi agreement forbade Gowon from doing this

This left Ojukwu with no other choice than to declare Biafra

The truth is that the Aburi agreement made it impossible for Gowon and his Northern cohorts to have that which they wanted most, the economic and political control of Nigeria

So they abolished the Regions, scrapped resource control and created 12 unitary states, allocating half of the states to the North. This would ultimately make the North masters of Nigeria

What they never imagined was that Ojukwu and his people would take that like other Regions cowardly did

Ojukwu did what any real man would do in the face of tyranny, injustice and subjugation, he rose and fought for freedom

Its better to fight for your freedom like a man and fail, than to bow down to slavery out of cowardice

Well your going to have to explain how that is possible when Nigeria had 4 Regions that were controlling their resources the day Ironsi died
Ironsi's decree 34 made Nigeria a unitary state. It came before Gowon's own and was broadcast for all to hear. Gowon only drove the final nail into the coffin. grin
According to the provisions of Decree
34, “Nigeria shall on 24th May 1966 (in this
decree referred to as ‘the appointed day’) cease
to be a Federation and shall accordingly as
from that day be a Republic, by the name of the
Republic of Nigeria, consisting of the whole of
the territory which immediately before that day
was comprised in the Federation”. This decree
made Nigeria a unitary state and removed its
federal structures.
