He can as well end the war tomorrow if he wishes, he's only extending it as long as possible to bait NATO into a direct involvement and give them the impression of a weak Russian army that can't even defeat Ukraine.

Do some research yourself. Google the GDP of US vs Russia. Google the amount of money the US spends on its military vs. Russia. I'll give you a hint the US spends more on its military than the next 10 countries COMBINED, that includes China and Russia.
And when you are talking about NATO, you are including countries like UK, Germany and France who spend roughly the same as Russia on their military.
The worst thing that could happen to Russia is the US getting involved (that's why they didn't attack Ukraine when Biden was there) which would mean the Full weight of NATO military power getting involved.
Russia is losing to a small country with some Western supplied weapons. Putin in all his genius, masterfully showed the world what a true Paper Tiger Russia really is.
