Good a thing, you didn't loose your job.

When you receive a task, Acknowledge receipt and state that you will reach out to them should you need further clarification. Then go read and study the task, write down your observation and if possible give them a call or one on one meeting and discuss then follow up with an email to confirm the discussion especially if some of the things you discuss is not stated in the scope of work of that task.

As much as necessary, restrain going back to them again unless you have a new question that have not been previously discussed or a new challenge comes up. Depending on the length of the task, give feedbacks especially when you hit a new milestone.

You communicate effectively not OVER, or you will come as an unserious person. The fellow who gave you task also have lots of things they are working on.

I got called out for a similar reason recently. Although for a slightly different communication issue.

I put my PC on priority notifications only to reduce distractions while working; this being because a lot of calculation is involved in every single task I do and I like to do them mentally since using tools can shave off extra minutes during processing. Most importantly, I like a very quiet and secluded environment, with just me and my music while working remote.

This can be quite costly as I often miss teammates' messages, team calls, and the likes. I got called out for 'lack of communication' in our last meeting as I came late for the meeting which was impromptly scheduled, then went ahead to personalize a response and sent it to the employer; a response that was agreed to be sent as a team response in another meeting impromptly scheduled that I missed.

Omo.. It wasn't funny. One downside of over communication though is you may be drawn into conversations of rather insignificant or negative value to you or your job and you'd rather not have.
are you an accountant?

Hire employees who understand Time quadrant. Its not everytime, tell me about yourself. The candidate's bio is in his/her cv so why waste precious time asking the wrong information in an interview?

An interview is a meeting where the HR wants to know if the person's attitude to work and skills to work corresponds to the company's values and mission statement.

But most times HR only focuses on skills and neglect character and attitude.

Sensible hiring companies like Imocha would have prevented that op from being a staff of that company.

Bye.

[quote author=Rubyjade post=123435658]I made a huge mistake that almost cost me my job.
This is when I didn't understand the principles of Effective Communication.

Want to learn from my mistakes? Keep reading.

Five years ago, while working remotely at Andela, I learned a valuable lesson about the power of communication.

Over-communication is key for success.

I received a Slack message from a product manager on a Friday, asking me to check out a bug reported by an important customer.

Naively assuming I would fix it on Monday, I went off to enjoy my weekend, unaware of the consequences that awaited me.

When I returned on Monday, the product manager singled me out during the morning call. He accused me of not caring about customers, of ignoring him on Slack, and failing to provide feedback.

The weight of my mistake hit me hard, and I realised that a simple act of over communication could have saved me from this ordeal.

From that point on, over communication became one of my personal values. Here's how I put it into practice:

1️⃣ Double ask every doubt: Whenever I receive a task or instruction, I ask for clarification on the deadline, the goal, and the scope.

I don't assume anything. I listen attentively, confirm my understanding, and express gratitude for the explanation.

Being a great communicator requires active listening and comprehension.

2️⃣ Provide regular updates: Even when not required, I make it a habit to give regular updates on my progress.

Whether it's a freelance project or working with a team, people appreciate being in the loop. I send emails, share progress reports, and ensure transparency.

This level of accountability and responsiveness appreciated in the workplace.

3️⃣ Show gratitude and kindness: A culture of gratitude and kindness goes a long way in building positive relationships.

I make it a point to express gratitude to my colleagues, especially when they go above and beyond to support me.

A simple "thank you" in a daily call, or a shoutout on Slack, acknowledging and appreciating others can foster a supportive work environment.

By doing these, I have seen the positive impact they have on my work relationships and overall success.

People notice when you go the extra mile to communicate, and it helps build trust and collaboration.[/quot

Nice one. It had been a shortcoming.

Effective communication yes

Over-communication? No!

Over communication can trigger unnecessary anger and may give you out as an unserious employee.

Especially if your superior is a female.

Exactly! 💯

This is how it should be. But some people bring their traumatic experiences into work until they make everywhere smell with their toxicity and when you finally ask for feedback, they explode. They're many on this forum who assume that you can assume work updates than be provided with feedback

It has nothing to do with over communication. It has everything to do with laziness and unseriousness at your job.
They said there is a bug and you tell yourself you will fix it after weekend? Without communicating same to the person that gave you the heads up?Who in their right mind does that?
