The umbrella body of journalists in the country, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday said it would withdraw its services if the Federal Government fails to reverse its decision to stop fuel subsidy.

A statement by the union’s National Secretary, Shuaibu Leman, made this known after an emergency Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held virtually on Saturday.

The statement said, “After presentations by the national president, Chris Isiguzo, and the national treasurer Bamidele Atunbi on the position taken by the NLC on the matter, members unanimously adopted the position of the NLC on the issue.

“CWC reiterates the argument that although the removal of fuel subsidy will free allocations which can be channelled to the provisions of infrastructure and creation of additional jobs, the sudden removal could, however, lead to social unrests and protests as people may perceive government as being insensitive to their plight.”

The NUJ stated that the removal of fuel subsidy and its attendant effect on petrol price and inflation has seen the purchasing power of the citizenry diminish significantly.

“CWC also notes that already there is an astronomical increase in the prices of petroleum products and high inflation which have drastically reduced the purchasing power of citizens.

Foolish Nigerians keep deluding themselves that this government will favour them when the handwriting is all over the wall. I just dey laff! Some are even supporting the subsidy removal on the naive thinking that the money realized will be channeled to developing the country!! Wake up foolish Nigerians. I know you don't want to hear this but the truth is that these monies will be looted and we will be back to square one.

And if you think this government will not be more corrupt than the previous one, then you must be a profound idiot!
Well, the subsidy removal doesn't affect our business atall! You remove it, we increase the pump price and no idiot can stop us. Some deluded Nigerians even think the government will regulate the price for us grin grin

Tinubu should at least provide insensitives for the masses, he should provide low cost buses and reduce train tickets and encourage agricultural farming by providing more security then add up to 20% increment for civil servants and reduce government expenses on Government payroll

Journalism in Nigeria is weak as fvck.... Most of them are struggling to survive, just like the Nigeria police, always collecting bribes to cover up for politicians.

By right, politicians should be more scared of journalist, than they are with EFCC.
