It appears the only solution to this issue of fuel subsidy removal is increase in wages.

But when wages are increased, prices of commodities will respond in the usual language which in effect dampens the increase in wages.

NLC will then start negotiating for another salary increase and if govt obliged again, the cycle is repeated.

We expect govt officials to be resourceful rather than simply following popular demands for wage increase as that will in effect portray them as just empty opportunists struggling to just control the resources.

Get experts in relevant fields to address this issue, I don't subscribe to increase in wages.

If fuel subsidy will result in causing inflation which will make workers to demand for wage increase which you say isn't sustainable, how then should the issue be resolved and of what use is fuel subsidy removal when it ends up increasing the already out of control inflation?

You didn't consider the private sector that employs about 65% of the total labour force n if they will be able to implement the minimum wage as NLC might get.

Neither did u take into consideration the army of unemployed that constitutes about 70% of the total population n how they will cope?

This removal will only lead to hyper inflation, which will lead to nothing else but anarchy as the citizens are already flat on their stomach as regards the harsh economy n now this...

God help us all.

Before you ask me how much I buy fuel. All west African countries are buying fuel higher than Nigeria even after subsidy removal they didn't need to vote for APC, PDP or Labour party, we are not isolated from world problems...

For me!! Downsizing the civil service is the way to go,too much deadwood getting paid for doing nothing thereby ballooning govt recurrent expenditure

Sighs!!!

When we are saying that there is high rate of unemployment, this one is saying civil service should be downsized.

Why not downsize cost of governance, (both houses of assembly), tackle corruption, privatise and ensure all 4 oil refineries are working, ensure Dangote refinery starts production as planned, tackle electricity deficiency e.t.c

The best solution is to decentralize the NNPCL(south-south,south east, south west, north east, north central, north west) to look for fuel and supply to each region at their own price and license artisanal refiners to use local technology since the cabal could not allow refineries to work. They are against the workings of government refineries and turn to glorify private individual in their believe every should be privatized to them and their children that government has no need doing business who told you when china is operating their businesses successfully. So meeting TUC,NLC is a waste of time and resources when most members are parts and parcels of the myriads of problems facing the country. This is 100% solution

Na lie, is privatisation in the telecom sector not working?

Privitise the refineries, its that simple.

Direct them to more productive segments of the economy like agric or manufacturing or even service sectors......govt should provide training for them on how they can stand alone and provide financial backing to them in terms of loans and guaranteed.....consolidate what they should Eran say over 10 years and monetise it for them.....you need to visit govt establishments to see how redundant and wasteful this guys are, they need to be pushed into productive segments rather than seating in those offices.

What Nigeria needs now is production, production and more production, once the economy is expanded, there will be more money for everyone......we need to find how to boost our economy without causing inflation...... Mere minimum wage increment will bring just about that and it's still papering over the cracks......govt recurrent expenditure alone is weighing down our economy,it needs to be reduced

The ones that are unemployed ,have they been engaged into productive sectors?

Every time peeps like you mention other African countries pay higher you forget we have crude in large quantities and this other countries don’t have as much as we do so fuel is supposed to be cheaper here …..is tv not cheaper in china than Nigeria? Or is tomatoes in the north not cheaper than tomatoes in the south part of Nigeria ?

The existing civil work force are already gazetted and already have some form of management training or the other, that's a good place to start......this will reduce govt recurrent alone by 30 to 40% and the savings can then be used for more purposeful things like insfarctruture for development.....if this civil servants are absorbed into private sector, that's more employment opportunities for the so-called unemployed you mentioned.....if 20,000 new farms were to be established for instance that's well over a million jobs from farms alone, then add other allied services, like transportation, processing, technicians, extension workers, construction workers etc then you would see the big picture......I am not saying this is the only solution to our economic woes but it's just one of the simple things we can do to boost our economy and free up govt finances and even make more money for govt through taxes and levies, subsidy removal is just one of them.

The publication was dated Wednesday, January 11, 2012, and was an edition of The Nation newspaper as published by Vintage Press Limited.

It reads...

ACTION Congress of Nigeria (ACN) national leader and former governor of Lagos State Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has accused the a Jonathan presidency of shirking its so- cial contract with the people by suddenly removing petrol subsidy

He, however, provided a window out of the crisis: if subsidy must be removed at all, it must never be at one fell swoop.

He said it must be on calibrated phrases*, on which the promised gains are mea- sured and confirmed before moving to the next phase of removal.

"Government must modify the sudden and complete removal of the subsidy. Elther we restore the subsidy or use the funds for other social purposes,"

Tinubu counselled in a special statement he cap- tioned, "Removal of oil subsidy-Presi dent Jonathan breaks social contract with the people' and which he personally signed.

"If we are to use the funds for other programmes, these programmes shall be placed on parallel track with the subsidy.

These were Tinubu's very own words so what happened?, why did he decide to go against his very own advise?

I am not against subsidy removal. I feel it was rushed. All in an attempt to appear presidential on Inauguration Day & may be deliver on an election promise I guess.

I believe a good leader is proactive rather than reactive. Measures should have been put in place to cushion the effect(s) of the removal. Whatever solution he has should have been in place at least to a certain level(while Nigerians await full implementation) before the announcement of the removal by end of June as planned for by the outgone administration. I believe government is a continuum much more one that is of course he same party.
You guys are funny, GEJ and Tinubu put nothing on ground before the removal.

Did GEJ increase wages?

All he did was SURE-P which was another great fraud.

The only thing that can cushion effects of subsidy removal includes:

1. Functional refineries more than one and give out license to import to multiple importers, this will float the market with products and create competition, also you disband association for importers.

2. Roll out a transportation master plan, where you revamp our current transportation system phasing out those dead buses and trucks and bringing in PPP where state and fg own 40% and private investors has 60%.
This will cushion the effect of subsidy removal on transportation and prevent rises in cost of food and overall prevent hyperinflation.

3. Improve on electricity and reduce duties on solar energy, further provide incentives for people willing to adopt solar energy, this will reduce the pressure on the national grid and also on petrol.

The truth is Nigeria is likened to a petrol economy majority of our Small and medium scale enterprises depends heavily on petrol.

Our transportation system is not organised so any increases in petrol in the name of subsidy will have ripple effects.

Both GEJ and Tinubu flopped.

What we need is efficiency not this very approach, subsidy removal require years of careful planning and infrastructure implementation.
Anything else is a mere knee-jerk reqction and it's not going to have any different effect.

I dont believe any level of govt can operate successfully in the absence of some subsidy in the economy. They are proposing removing fuel subsidy but projecting that wage increase will help cushion the consequential fall out in commodity and service pricing. This is a net-zero effect. Like you said, an orbital programme from one administration to another.

What is going on around the world is societies are moving away from combustion engines. Many municipalities encourage this by taxing sales of combustion vehicles and habits. To gain from that, employers sign to a protocol of responsible custodians by implementing commuter transportation into benefit packages. Another option is workspace hub. There is also programmes to reward physical fitness, and so they make it affordable and accessible to ride bicycles to and from work.

The has been increase in number of people in different age groups that will just slump and die. Those that survive end up with irreversible stroke conditions. Few years ago, President Tinubu lost his son, Deji in similar way. So we need a keep fit regimen for our civil servants, students, private sector workers, teachers, and so on. So this would need govt creating access and safety for cyclists to share road with automobiles, with severe penalties and enforcement for violators. Like BRT lanes in Lagos, govt can create bike lanes.

Similarly, zones should be encouraged to develop intra-commuter rail as an extension, and link to metro rail network. This will help decongest cities and provide options for working class citizens.

Our society have a lot of service industry. Typically, except sales, marketing where you need physical face to face interaction with customer, most service can be provided remotely. So there should be sharespace office hubs. This is a imperative on private sector, does not need govt intervention to take off.

The subsidy needs to be removed, and no need to increase wages to offset, but changes I outlined above are helpful in changing habits and mindset about self responsibility towards an improved society overall.
