Why didn’t Tinubu backed down despite strike threats by the useless NLC ?

No one pointed gun on Goodluck head then ,he’s not just tough enough then . So stop living in the past.
God bless you! They kept disturbing us with Jonathan this, Jonathan that..as if he was held at gun point to revert the decision.

If he believed it was in the best interest of Nigeria, why backing down? He could have calmed the situation by bringing up palliative measures such as minimum wage increment and so on.

He succumbed to pressure by partially removing the subsidy and still wasting our money on failed palliative programs such as SURE-P and purchase of buses for transport unions.

A good leader should be decisive and proactive on matters that affect the country's economic development.

Small people make noise, he start to shake, reverse the right decision? yet he still lost the 2015 election?

Mumu Man.
no be only that bro. he conducted the best confab acceptable to all, instead of implementing it, he was afraid of losing 2015 election which he later lost. He had that opportunity to be nigeria best hero but he fumbled big time. His type is not fit for leadership position in this part of the world because he lacks courage.

When Jonathan , a son of the "south South" Removed this same subsidy in 2012,

The people spreading all this propaganda, supporting removal of subsidy today were the same people protesting against it then at Ojota with APc leadership...

They called Jonathan all sorts of names, carried a coffin for him.. Wole Soyinka, Tunde Bakare to name a few..

True.

The problem with many countries is that good economic decisions are not always the popular decisions.

(Am not sure whether removing subsidy would have ended borrowing. Reduced it , yes, stopped it, no.)
in that particular sector there wouldn’t have been anything like borrowing the plan was to prevent it because the economist has seen the danger ahead .

I was talking about borrowing in general but the particular sector.

The method Tinubu used to remove this subsidy is very bad.

He should have done it like a rehab.

When the motive to remove Subsidy is still to reloot the money, then you won't care how or when to remove it.

Tinubu for a reason, he has already shown majority of Nigerians that he's a failure an worse than Buhari in less than 2 weeks of entering office.

True, but if it was that easy, IBB and even Abacha would have removed fuel subsidy like that, no shaking.

Even Buhari during his first and second coming would have just wiped fuel subsidy (Buhari even wiped subsidies on food in the early 1980's..part of why he got overthrown)..

But they all could not because they knew Nigerians, even their own tribesmen would storm the Presidential mansion and remove them by force.

Yeah, Tinubu did it...because quite simply, he, and even his main rivals know, that we cannot pay for subsidy anymore. Not when borrowing is happening.

Even then, if subsidy had gone in 2011, there were plans on the drawing board to build three new greenfield refineries as at 2010. Plans that did not take off because subsidy made then economically unattractive.

Yeah, Dangote built a refinery....but he knew back then in 2014 that he was taking a big risk. There were licence holders for private refineries then, but none of them wanted to take the risk of building a refinery when there was still subsidy.

You didn't get it if subsidy is remove and the marketer still import and sell on their price the country will be expensive but with a brand soon to start refinery marketers can't hold Nigeria hostage.
Then and now are different

1.You make a good point here.

2.HOWEVER, the fact is, fuel has always been more expensive in all our neighbours, and other West African countries. (In Benin and Cameroon, fuel hovers between N480-500 or more. Niger too has high prices. Cheap smugglied Nigerian fuel has been the hope of the common man in all our neighbours too. Hence the protests.

Since there is no more cheap smuggled fuel, the common man and woman has to buy fuel from the official petrol stations, which not only is more expensive, but,(at least in Benin) is taxed.
That's true Subsidy is a cancer no doubt.
And I know marketers smuggle our subsidizes petroleum products to other African counties.
But it shouldn't make us to deny the existence of a failed successive governments.
No functional refineries, even other sectors are lagging behind too.
They say they will invest the Subsidy money but then ask yourself, what happened to the loans we've been collecting?

Lack of functional refineries was because of the low prices inherent in subsidy.

Basically, subsides are paid to compensate the petroleum sector for selling petrol below the production cost.

Yes, you can have a subsidy AND have working refineries...but you are either a country who 1) has a small population and a very large amount of money from oil..like Libya and Saudi OR 2) you do it at a heavy debt like Iran (who as at now spends twice their revenue from oil on subsidy).

(Iranian government has even moved the idea of removing subsidies...but their people have said no too.).

I do not advocate for break up of Nigeria into Odua and Biafra, instead i am of the opinion that Benin, Togo, Chad, Niger and Cameroun should become Federated units of United Nigeria States.

Now it is clear that we need to keep our borders open and take care of all these other Africans openly instead of this smugglers trade regions that they are.
