Tottenham Vs Arsenal (2 - 1) On 2nd October 2011 by mukina2: 12:24pm On Sep 30, 2011 |
Arsenal fans have come up with a name to celebrate the time of the season it becomes mathematically impossible for Tottenham to finish above them in the table. St Totteringham's Day has been in existence for around a decade now, and its acolytes have yet to miss out on their annual jubilee. Not since 1994-95, a year before Arsene Wenger's arrival, have Spurs finished above their arch-rivals, but Harry Redknapp said this week that he believes his men can finally "overhaul" the Gunners this season. There is justification: Spurs, despite having had a marginally more taxing fixture list, are already two points ahead with a game in hand. Arsenal, on the back of victories over Bolton and Olympiakos, have a platform to move forwards, but a defeat at White Hart Lane would represent a serious setback to the sense of progress after a tumultuous few months. The Gunners played 14 games in 2010-11 following their defeat to Birmingham in the Carling Cup final, but they were only able to beat Leyton Orient, Blackpool and Manchester United. The end of the campaign brought no respite to the talk of crisis as Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri left and, with Jack Wilshere then suffering an injury, the new-look team has inevitably struggled during the bedding-in period. If the Gunners could secure a third successive victory, a sense of optimism over the new era may well take root - there could, after all, be few greater boosts to morale than victory at White Hart Lane - but the hosts are justifiable bookies' favourites for Sunday's game. Spurs have recovered well from their early thrashings at the hands of the Manchester clubs and have lost none of their last 15 home London derbies in the Premier League since defeat against Arsenal in September 2007. If they find their form again this weekend, the result could be a serious threat to the St Totteringham's Day festivities this season. Tottenham Hotspur player to watch: Emmanuel Adebayor. Arsenal fans have significant reason to fear for their defence on Sunday: Adebayor has long had a taste for taste for these clashes, scoring eight goals in nine North London derbies for the Gunners, and he tends to thrive when provoked by the opposition fans. He has continued the trend of making an instant impact when joining a new club, scoring three goals in his three Spurs games to date, and will be hoping to improve upon that record as he prepares to take on an injury-hit Gunners backline. Arsenal player to watch: Robin van Persie. There has been speculation over his future in recent days but, while it remains unclear where Van Persie will be playing long-term, for now his form and fitness will be central to Arsenal's hopes of revival. He scored his 100th goal for the club in the 3-0 win over Bolton and, with four goals in his last four starts against Tottenham, he will be hoping to add to that tally on Sunday. Key Battle: Scott Parker v Mikel Arteta. Tottenham, for the first time in a long time, may feel they now boast the personnel to win the midfield battle and control the game, but it will be intriguing to see whether Arteta is able to dictate the play and how well Parker is able to stop him. The pair were both deadline-day signings and, as players with extensive Premier League experience, it is unsurprising that they have both adapted quickly to life in North London and become a key part of their teams. Trivia: Arsenal and Tottenham were the first London teams to take part in the Football League. Stats: Tottenham have managed only one clean sheet in their last 31 games against Arsenal, while there were 16 goals scored in the three meetings between Arsenal and Tottenham last season and four penalties netted. Its just funny how people think with Arsenal's crappy team this season, that they can beat spurs that kept all their stars of last season (bale, vart, modric etc) and even added Adebayor and Parker, Arsenal fans should be happy if they can pull out a draw from this game. Any team that can sell fabregas and nasri in one season without viable (quality) replacements does not deserve to finish in the top 4 of the EPL in my opinion. |

Re: Tottenham Vs Arsenal (2 - 1) On 2nd October 2011 by folahann(m): 12:23pm On Oct 01, 2011 |
big_sean: Even with your bestest team, you will still finish below Arsenal (making an assumption u're a Spurs fan). If Arsenal comes 19th this season, we will still have to look below us for Spurs at 20th. If spurs finish 2nd, you will have to look above for Arsenal. That was the case in your best season when Spurs qualified for UCL, Arsenal was looking down at Spurs from 3rd place. We'll always shhite on you. |
