“If They Don’t Pay In 2yrs, They Go To Jail, Improper” – ASUU Urges Tinubu To Convert Loans To Grants For Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked President Bola Tinubu to change the newly assented Students Loans Act to grant for indigent students.

“This would have been better if we are giving it to those set of students who are very poor, it should be called a grant, not a loan,” ASUU National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme today.

“It should be called a grant since it is coming from the Federation Account and not that (after) these people have access it and when they are graduating, they have heavy loads behind them and within two years, if they don’t pay, they go to jail. That’s why we’re talking about collective bargaining, you have views from all the sides.”

Exactly. I think I agree with ASUU on this. Who would a graduate go to jail for his inability to offset a loan after two years of graduation knowing full well that, within these two years, he would still be Jobless? Some factors need to be put into consideration please

Actually, the student loan money is meant for lecturers who will be paid through the increase in fees the loans create.

Maybe if you guys were not constantly going on strike yet not improving educational quality...maybe just maybe none of this would have been an option.

Nobody should give anyone a grant.

Asking the FG to make it grant means that ASUU wants to continue running Nigerian universities like shithole schools.

The FG should expand the repayment window to 5 years. And those running the school should make it attractive in a way it can attract international students.

Build schools that solve real-world problems, but a place where you throw project works away because you don't even see the value. There's a reason the rest of the world is going to the UK, US and Canada to further their education.
