The Peoples Democratic Party has said President Goodluck Jonathan’s war against corruption has no political coloration.


The party, therefore, called on the opposition political parties currently undergoing trial for alleged corruption not to see their prosecution as one of the plans by the PDP-led Federal Government to stifle the opposition.


The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prof. Rufai Alkali, stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Sunday.


Alkali said it was unfortunate that members of the opposition parties always cried foul whenever anyone of them was arraigned for corruption-related offences.


He called on the opposition political parties to take their own cue from members of the PDP who had been arraigned and in some cases convicted.


The former National Vice-Chairman of the PDP in South-West, Chief Olabode George, recently completed his jail term having been convicted of corruption.


Also, a former Governor of Edo State, who is also a member of the PDP, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, had been convicted of corruption.


Apart from the duo, some former PDP governors currently are undergoing trial for alleged corruption while in office.


Some of the former governors are Jolly Nyame (Taraba), Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti), Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu), Orji Kalu (Abia), Boni Haruna (Adamawa), Joshua Dariye (Plateau) and Rashidi Ladoja (Oyo).


However, the arraignment of the former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu before the Code of Conduct Tribunal sparked protest from the camp of the opposition, which accused the Federal Government of trying to intimidate the opposition.


Tinubu is the national leader of one of the major opposition political parties in the country, the Action Congress of Nigeria.


Alkali, however, asked the opposition parties to think twice before jumping into conclusion.


He said, “This party (PDP) came up to say it is going to fight corruption and most of our people were caught up with the law but they took it calmly.


“If those who are not in PDP are caught up, they say it is no more against corruption; that government wants to use them to stifle the opposition.


“Does it mean that if you are in the opposition it is acceptable for you to do whatever you like?”


Alkali disagreed that the non-performance of the former PDP governors made the party to lose in some states, especially in the South-West.


He said states such as Lagos, Yobe and Borno where the PDP had never won governorship election since 1999 did not fare better.


“The PDP is running the country for 12 years now remember that out of these 36 states and Abuja, there are states that have never had the PDP governments like Lagos, Yobe and Borno.


“If you do a dispassionate analysis on what has been happening in the PDP-controlled states vis-a-vis the PDP-non controlled states, I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that the PDP has done much better than in those states where you never had the PDP in control.


“But, some of the other states not controlled by us and their parties can use propaganda to cover up their tracks.”
