The acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has vowed to effect the withdrawal of Police Mobile Force personnel from VIP escort/guard duties.

This is as he established the Special Intervention Squad which according to him would have 40,000 highly trained police officers including selected officers from the Police Mobile Force.

The development, he said, was to allow the police to take back its place in the “internal security architecture” of the country.

Egbetokun spoke during a meeting with Squadron leaders and Tactical Commanders in Abuja on Monday

He said, “In a bid to kick-start the process of regaining our pride of place in the internal security architecture of our dear country first and foremost, modalities for the creation of a new special squad – the Special Intervention Squad have been initiated.

This special squad shall consist of 40,000 specially trained elite officers. The Squad will be formed by selecting officers from the pool of existing Police Mobile Force personnel and all tactical units in the country.

“These officers will undergo an intensive pre-deployment training to make them combat-ready for frontline operational duties in all the states of the Federation, with a particular focus on areas plagued with unrest and turmoil.

“By pooling together the expertise and experience of our PMF personnel and other tactical units, we can establish a formidable force that is well-equipped to handle the evolving challenges we face.”

He added that the establishment of the squad would help the police to promptly respond to security threats, noting that 1000 personnel would be deployed to every state.

Egbetokun said, “This dedicated force will bolster our capacity to respond swiftly and decisively to security threats, ensuring that our presence is felt and our response is effective in every corner of our country. 1000 personnel from this new squad will be deployed to every state of the Federation for immediate operations as standby intervention units, while more troubled spots or zones will receive the remaining officers out of the 40,000.

“These officers will not perform routine police duties but will be housed and kept combat-ready at all times engaging in daily training readiness for deployments to intercept and neutralize high-profile criminals and those terrorizing our communities. ”

The police boss stated that the new special squad would be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to combat evolving criminal activities, insurgency, and other security threats, especially the activities of non-state actors.

Egbetokun said that the withdrawn PMF officers will be replaced by officers from the Special Protection Unit.

He said, We shall effect the withdrawal of PMF personnel from VIP escort/guard duties. While the protection of dignitaries remains paramount, it is imperative that we realign our priorities to address the escalating security challenges faced by the nation as a whole. By relieving the PMF of VIP escort and guard duties, we can redirect their focus and efforts toward addressing critical security concerns that affect our communities at large.

“To support the foregoing strategic plan and make needed manpower available for frontline duties, the withdrawn PMF officers will be replaced by officers of the Special Protection Unit only where necessary.”

Egbetokun said a special committee headed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations) had been set up to assess and advise on how the strategy could be implemented seamlessly.

He added that the committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks.

Nice development but not until it is drawn from private security pool.

We must do everything to de-subsidised the elite. Let anyone who need escort or private guard pay for them from his pocket.

Government should stop subsidising security for individual elite. Police is meant to offer general protection to lives and property of all Nigerians and not become exclusive right of the elites and political leaders

Seems the second word I dislike after Obidients is subsidy

This idea sounds good.

Looks this 'Tinubu boy' IGP Olukayode Egbetokun has innovative plans for Nigerian Police and the good thing is that he will not sweat to secure presidential support.

But given what happened in last general election particularly in Lagos, he shouldn't touch the issue of state police because omooor na better trap for non-indigenes in each of the states of the federation be dat.

Tinubu is surrounded by his own loyaltists who they have been together for decades. They are not just loyalists but round pegs in round holes. That popular excuse we make for inefficient governance "the President has the intention of doing good but the people around him are not loyal and have no good intentions.........." has no reason to arise at all in Tinubu's government. Anything less than 90% success simply means FAILURE.

I am confident that, Nigeria will experience a rapid acceleration in the direction of lasting prosperity in a very short time to come, because of the cohesive nature of this government working to achieve the same goal.

If you were not supporting destabilizing of your indigenous villages by supporting terrorists, you won’t be afraid of State Police. Lagos people want State Police. If you don’t like it, your State is there.

This is very nice. This is how it's done in the US and many developed countries. Not that when there is an emergency, you will be phoning police officers at home to quickly report for duty. Before they arrive at the office and mobilize to the scene the damage has been done

Wonder if you have you ever left your state of origin or region to another because, godamm it, you sound so stuffy and narrow.

You need some fresh air. You need to see the world because not traveling obviously makes you see life as one-page book but it is not.

For your information, your tribesmen who dared to sojourn enjoy the hospitality of other people and will equally suffer the effect of prejudiced state police personnel.

All of your predecessors gave the same directive and also the dismantling of check points but in the end nothing is different. So there's nothing new here, just the same circus

Na dem sabi. We want State Police in Lagos. Since they decide to leave home, if they do anyhow. Dem suppose see anyhow. There is nothing bigoted there. It is better to be policed by people whose father and family are known. Very less likely to misbehave

Naivety 😅😅😅 the IG before this did this , the one before him did this and I applauded , the one before that did this , so are you saying you've not noticed the pattern? There is a reason why they do this if you don't know and it's not for the benefit of society

A sound innovation at repositioning the NPF. There's no reason why our Mobile Police would be so reduced to a mere body guard to VIPs. Our Mobile Police must henceforth be battle ready at all times to deal crushingly with any criminal gangs within the teritory.

Yes you can do it. You’ve done it before and you can do it better again.

But ensure the elites go thru psychological test so we don’t end up with endsars 2
