With the the rampant and diverse rate insecurity in nigeria, I think it has become necessary for states in Nigeria to operate state police forces solely under the command of the state governor.

State police is a good idea...except

1.Finding the money....police forces cost a lot of money. In overseas countries they are funded by TAXES. If we tried it in Nigeria, most Nigerians would protest that 'we are poor'.

2.Tribalism and religion: We had regional police in the 1960's...and where were they during the pogroms of 1966? Nowhere.

If state police are to be introduced, state judiciary should be introduced, states should have their own constitutions that dont contradict the national constitution. And their activities should be transparent to the federal government, i dont trust state governors at all.

State Policing is a good, welcomed and long-overdue policy but it will be difficult to implement because of the huge disparity in the wealth of Nigerian States which means many States will simply not be able to afford to set it up and run it efficiently.

Regional policinf is more practical as it would be fairly easy to fund. It would also be a lot less unwieldy and bureaucratic than State Policing.

The NPF cannot ever work. Large swathes of Nigeria is improperly policed because of the inefficient nature of the NPF.

Nigeria today needs smart and efficient policies and institutional set ups, where possible, that can take account of the differences and peculiarity of her people.

Yes, because every crime is local.

We claim to model our democracy towards the US, the same US has city police, county police, state police and one federal police which is FBI (equivalent to our DSS)

We are overdue for state police. Some skeptics who are anti-state police believes the state governors will abuse it; question: are the governors not abusing the federal police?

Indeed. Besides, the excuse Governors will abuse State policing shows that Nigerians are too myopically focused on politics alone.

Pastors talk politics all the time from the pulpit when this is not so in other climes. Maternity ward, they are talking politics instead of focusing on contractions lol.

Ordinary folks who should be worried about security of lives and property are busy worrying about Governors persecuting their political opponent with State police.

Yet, how much times will the police serve Governors in comparison to their primary duty of protecting Nigerian lives and property while fighting crime?

We really need to start focusing on what is important, progressive and beneficial to the ordinary Nigerian and not worrying always about what a group, I.e politicians, that are not even 1% of the population will do to each other.

Please stop this myopic and redundant focus on Governors. At least 95% of the everyday duties of the police will be focused on protection of lives and property plus crime-fighting.

Why are Nigerians, even giving your governor argument the benefit of the doubt, more focused on politicians hounding each other while it seems you forget the core duties of the police and what they will be doing most of the time?

Why do you think about everything from a political aspect, and more about politicians, to the extent you seem to be forgetting the core functions of things, people and organisations?

Should Nigerians not worry more about adequate policing for ordinary Nigerians than anything else.

FBI is not equivalent of our DSS.

The US Secret Service is equivalent of our DSS.

While FBI is what our current Federal Police would be equivalent to when we also have State Police.

Because it would be naive to believe governors wouldnt try to abuse the use of state police for political reasons, their thugs do enough damage as of now, proper checks and balances need to be made if states are to have their own police force

Yes, absolutely imperative..

Also there should be a hotline that provides direct and prompt information to police ..

In South Africa, it doesn’t matter where you’re. Just dial 10111 and police will appear from nowhere .. in fact the nearest police van will respond to the crime scene.

I have constantly maintained that states should have their own police. However, the police in Abuja should be watching over the activities of the various police formations across the country.

If a state governor tries to use the police for his selfish political gains, the Abuja regulator will step in and take over it (start running it). However, the state police can only be returned to the state when the governor leaves the office.

Running a country is no rocket science, we just keep electing idiots to run this shithole!

it will be a welcome development but you know this Nigerian thing and those state governors that will be in charge; they will just hijack the command and use it to intimidate, harass, arrest and even kill any opposing forces in their respective state who goes contrary to their won views or policies.

It is even long overdue, and not just the state police, we also need local police by the local government and ensure total autonomy of the local government area.

No, never! Nigerian politicians are animals!!

Create state police and see how they will begin to use it for the wrong reasons; political witch hunt, election rigging, clashes between federal and state and many more...

Nigeria was not designed to work, even if local government police is introduced, it still won't work.

How many state in the North can afford to pay police salary or other essentials?

Yes

But their Armed Department should be Supervised and overseen by the Chief Justice of the State

And the NSCDC civil defence Commander should supervise the States Vigilantes

State policing will reduce lots of police fraudulent activities.....

If it's controlled by states while there's a general IG.
..the state commissioner can't control them because he's also a public servant.
