For all of the woefulness of Nigeria…

The US student loan debacle should answer those Nigerians (especially doctors) who “japa” and complain that Nigeria never did anything for them - while their American colleagues are carrying anywhere from $250K to over $1m in student loan debt.

Reality is that education is an “investment” that a nation or society makes in its citizenry, with the expectation of a “return” therefrom whereupon those educated citizens work to make the nation or society even better than they met it.

Of course, that’s not the only investment the state has to make (security, good governance, etc., are also necessary), but ultimately Nigeria’s condition comes down to the culmination of the various actions (by commission or omission) of ALL NIGERIANS!

Yeah! You're not the average Joe, you know your American politics. 300+ billion dollars just gone like that? Nah! Meanwhile, you have to be earning less than a certain amount of money to have that wiped for you, so who's getting favored here?

The student loan in Nigerian cannot even be accessed, let alone forgiven.

That is how bad the loan is.

but schools has been increased by over 300%.

Biden always knew it would never fly, but he set the conservative supreme court up. A win-win for him

The conservative justices just gave him a bazooka to take into the election campaign.

America is a country where laws work! If Biden wants a cheap way to win his re-election bid, he should use his money to pay the student loans. That's if he has anything close to that.

But then, if Americans, who can easily get jobs after college, are unable to repay their student loans, is it in Nigeria where a student cannot get a decent job after 5 years that people can pay their student loans? grin

Spoken like folks who do not see education as a PUBLIC good or asset…
That’s why I consistently contend that most Nigerians mirror (and DESERVE) their rulers.

UK and US are two opposite countries in a lot of things. Take for instance in the UK with the NHS you can get free medical care. In the US you will pay heavily for it

In the UK if students took loan from the government and graduate from uni, for you to start paying that loan you should be earning up to 30k or more annually that way they will be knocking off £50 per month for your student loan. But if couldn’t get a job of 30k and above for a certain number of years it will be forgiven.
that's good, hope Nigeria will do thesame.

Republicans have no problem with college being $100,000 while not wanting any loan forgiveness or wage increases in jobs. Then they complain when poorer Americans are uneducated which leads to business importing immigrants to do jobs. Then they’ll complain that the immigrants are taking over the jobs.

Instead of creating new academic policies and reforms to mitigate the exorbitant student loans, he's trying to forgive debt. If those debts had been forgiven; What would happen to future student loans? How would financial companies recoup their losses and pay those supposed graduates working for them?

This would have been just a vicious cycle: forgive current loan debts, loan companies suffer, workers are laid off, possible rates hike for student loans, reduced student loan issuance/strict requirements, less people in school, advocacy for free/cheap/access to education, more people in school, more student loans accumulate. It never goes away.

How would loan companies have suffered in a debt forgiveness scenario?

Why are you so loud in your ignorance?

Oga, you don't run finances with emotions.

That's why nothing works in Nigeria.

To maintain universities that pioneer innovative research that transforms the world, you need a lot of money.

There's a reason American universities are the best in the world and also are some of the most expensive.

Education is not cheap. If you keep having shitty education, you keep churning out unemployable graduates. That's where student loans come in.

Biden cannot wake up and forgive student loans. Things don't work like that. Perhaps he will wake up someday and tell Americans to stop paying taxes because they have been abolished.

Laws work? That's a naive statement. Which laws?
This Supreme Court Majority (6 unelected people) have been aggregating power. They have been rewriting laws that Congress has passed and Presidents have signed based on what they think. Until Congress(Dems) gets serious and takes some of the power back, the Supreme Court justices are the true Power in the US. Republicans are happy with it because they really don't like democracy.

They have also argued that taxes paid by Americans who didn't attend college shouldn't be used to fund those who did.

Makes sense

But the US Government woke up one day and gave Wall Street and 4 Investment Banks $700 Billion dollars to save them from collapsing that very week in 2008

And don't tell me that they paid back because it was a supposed to be a Free Economy and Tax payers money was not meant for saving wall Street ,also had they been allowed to collapse they would have gone out of Business altogether for good

Biden should see if he can get the Senate to Pass it
