Funny Nigerians, they want to enjoy government facilities yet they are not ready to pay tax

They want stable electricity but na illegal connection dem dey use.

We need to learn the culture of monthly bills in Nigeria, most especially in the housing sector, when you know if you don't pay your bills, your service would be disconnected, you wont have any choice to work your ass off.

Nothing comes cheaper apart from salt. Even in Freetown, no free things

Blatant, consistent and unbriddles stealing of public funds is what led the Nigerian state to this situation.

That foreign culture that you think is good, is not one you really want to have.

There will be suicides and exponential fatal armed robberies that you don't have the men and resources to cope with.

What you have done is to steal from and oppress the down trodden and then blame them. Nigerians are not lazy, it is their government officials that are shameless thieves.

The saddest and funny thing is that it's THOSE that are suffering most that are bringing this type of posts, the poster should have told is one sacrifice that THOSE that are stealing this Money are making with their children, they will use their last 200 naira to buy data to come defend those using them and if you refuse to join them they call you IPOB or IGBO and hater,

This again is the problem. I am adversely affected by the subsidy removal but I know it is the right thing to do so I support it.

If you reject something simply because it hurts you but it is beneficial, that is a lack of principles.

The country is spending 73.5% of revenue to service debt. It would now borrow money to subsidize petrol adding to the public debt and increasing the amount needed to service it. Give or take another 5 years, and debt servicing will gulp 100% of revenue if the petrol subsidy isn't removed.

The petrol subsidy is not benefiting you. You lose more than you gain. Petrol subsidy puts pressure on the Naira and makes it depreciate, thereby making goods costlier in a negative way.

Also, ending the fuel subsidy has ended the corruption associated with it and stopped the export of petrol to neighbouring countries. Even if it is smuggled there, the country loses nothing.

Most importantly, just like deregulated prices led to an investment boom by GSM carriers in the telecom sector which grew the number of phone numbers in 2001 from 400,000 to over 100m today, so will the deregulation of the fuel price create an investment boom in the petroleum sector creating hundreds of thousands of high paying job.

No bank will lend you $2bn to build a 100,000bpd refinery when the end product is subsidized. The subsidy has for decades scared off investments in the sector. The only reason why Dangote and Bua have gone ahead to set up refineries is that they can use their highly profitable cement businesses as collateral.

The benefit of a refining boom will be far greater than what was obtained in the telecom sector. It would create a lot of wealth and jobs, both high and low paying, directly and indirectly.

Agreed, now tell me why this person who removed it now did not support it when someone wanted to remove it back then? This is more than the five years you are talking since, we should have been benefitting from it by now and most likely you are among those than supported non removal of the subsidy then

Things will never get better under this govt. Things will get better is just another deceit from this evil govt. Buhari did same and till now, nothing changed. Tinubu is going the part of Buhari and it will be worst than Buhari. He has not clue on how to handle economy. Just think of PO being in power and the likes of NOI comes to play. Nigerians will smile

Take advantage of the situation and join the Club of Exporters.

You can export Kolanut, Cashew Nuts, Palm kernel, Charcoal, Gem Stones, Bitter Kola, Poundo-Yam (5kg of Poundo Yam is sold for £15-18 in London which will give you about #16,000 on each bag).

I did not know you were a BAT supporter. cheesy , I also did not know you are part of the people oppressing us, and that you support bad things, nigbati, nigbati...(sarcasm fully intended).

On a more serious note, good post. I like the point you made about subsidy not benefiting us.

The petrol subsidy is not benefiting you. You lose more than you gain. Petrol subsidy puts pressure on the Naira and makes it depreciate, thereby making goods costlier in a negative way

EGGSACTLY. Then there is the large deficit caused by spending larger and larger amounts on subsides for nothing.

The annoying thing about discussing subsidy on nairaland is that people think you are backing the government or supporting oppression. Then the abuse flies in, and people miss your point completely.

God knows, I don't like this government for many reasons, most of which is there is no plan to take us away from oil dependecy, and no plan to make us earn more from taxation, but at the end of the day, as you said, we are spending far too much on subsidy.

If Peter Obi was in charge, and removed subsidy, I will praise and support him. Ditto Atiku. It was time the subsidy went. God knows it should have gone since 2012, even since the 1990's when it was suggested.

.P.S

To every pro-subsidy person out there...has subsidy made our economy better? The answer is no.

I have to agree with you here, even though you are a supporter of APC, which was doing what you said for years, same as PDP.

But that was then, this is now. And reality demands we start finding solutions. I hope, for our sakes, that your BAT finds answers to these issues.

Yes, we should cry and blast all the parties and even former army governments for doing the same old thing year in year out, but now, we are at crisis point. Time to put aside politics, and get into reality...or we find ourselves being IMF's footstool in a few years, doing slave labour for them without being paid.

Tinubu was wrong to have opposed subsidy removal in 2012(he knew better how subsidy was damaging our economy, yet decided to play Machiavelli )...but so was GEJ being wrong not to have told Tinubu, Buhari and co to sit down, and shut up, and then GEJ would have removed subsidy.

The truth is, GEJ did not remove subsidy because most Nigerians love subsides. He did not remove it for the same reason many of our leaders since 1973 had not remvoed it. Even tough strong autocrats like Abacha, because...Nigerians prefered it.

But even then, GEJ did partial removal because our subsidy costs then had jumped from 25% of revenue in 2010 to 65% in 2011. Had he continued with N65, subsidy costs were on track to eat our entire revenue within a few years. At some point, something had to give.

Too bad he did not go the whole hog and remove the thing. He was president, remember. He had the power to tell Buhari and Tinubu and the ojotoa crowd to shut up and sit down.

You didn't tell me at what point tinubu realized that he was wrong and why he hasn't agreed that he was wrong and while the whole gang that wanted it to continue then all changed at the same time and now want it removed, and tell me why all the ojota gangare now calling THOSE they challenged dumb for refusing to do what they are doing now, for obvious reasons nigeria is gone, nothing will make nigeria good again, ever, mark this and save it, as they all wanted Jonathan and then buhari to fail, others are going to make sure they fail and most importantly, nigeria is managed in favouritism and tribalism and hypocrisy and bigotry, and hate, croinism, it can end only in one way

Let them reduce their salaries, sell of the expensive luxury cars in their convoys Range Rovers, Mercedes, BMW, Cadillac, Toyota Landcruiers VX, stop eating the expensive food and drinking premium wine, stop flying private jets and flying first class and staying in the presidential suites of local and international hotels.

Why must Nigerians be the ones the bear the brunt while the corrupt political class that made the country the poverty and corruption capital of the world not be made to relinquish their loot or cut the cost of governance.
