Remi Tinubu urges Falcons to win World Cup

The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has tasked the Super Falcons with winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals holding in Australia and New Zealand.

She gave the charge in Abuja on Saturday while hosting the team to a dinner ahead of its departure on Sunday for the tournament which starts July 20 and ends August 20.

Tinubu, who was represented by Dr. Betta Edu, the All Progressives Congress National Women Leader, said that Nigeria’s appearance at the 9th FIFA Women’s World Cup must be for the noble purpose of bringing the coveted cup home.

Drumming support for the Super Falcons, she pointed out that football was a major unifier in the country and urged the team to work hard so as to match the expectations of Nigerians.

“It is important that you remain committed by playing together as a team; no one should think that she’s a better player than the other.

“It is only when you play as a team that you can record success. It is my expectation that this time, you will surpass your previous efforts.

“I am sure that 99.9 per cent of Nigerians will stay glued to their television sets to watch you. Please try your best to bring the cup home.”

While expressing her faith in the ability and pedigree of the team to excel at the mundial, the first lady promised to receive the team herself when they bring the cup home.

Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Gashua, thanked the Federal Government for supporting the team.

“Football remains the biggest unifier across the world; it has helped to shore up our national image while helping to reduce criminal tendencies among the youth.

“I want to encourage the coaches to be more committed because you will be accountable for the outing.”

Among the dignitaries that attended the dinner were the Deputy Governor of Edo, Mr Philip Shuaibu, top sports administrators, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The Nigerian national female soccer team is among the eight national teams that have featured in each of the competitions since it debuted in 1991.

2023 FIFAWW/Cup: Super Falcons Captain Promises Nigerians A Memorable Outing

Nigerians have been reassured once more by the Super Falcons’ captain Onome Ebi that their team is prepared to represent the country with pride at the World Cup.

She made this known during the dinner hosted by the Australian High Commission in Abuja before they left for Australia today.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Ebi stated that they are prepared to represent the nation with pride in Australia and New Zealand.

“I want to tell Nigerians that we are going to Australia, not just to participate, but to surpass our record in the last outing. I believe we will make Nigerians proud”, she said.

It will be noted that Nigeria’s best record at the World Cup is reaching the quarter-finals in the 1999 edition in United States.

The team is expected to have a 15-day training period in Australia before settling down for the competition proper.

Ebi will be one of the oldest players at the tournament, at 40, alongside Brazil’s Marta and Canada’s Christine Sinclair. The three women will be featuring in their sixth FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament.

Nigeria’s first match of the finals is against Canada, at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium, on Friday, 21 July, before clashes with co-host nation Australia and the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, 27 July and Monday, 31 July respectively, at the Lang Park in Brisbane.

Australia and New Zealand 2023 will be the biggest-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in history, as it welcomes 32 teams – same number as featured in the men’s finals in Qatar last year.

Why associating with mandate thieves who have blood on their hands when going for a tournament that you need luck and God's Providence to take you forward?......How much will these dirty politicians will give you that is worth more than the millions of Nigerian hearts that you will bring Joy to by going far in this world cup?........ Sacrificing the fans happiness for your pocket?......so NFF can not fully sponsor this girls or what?...... their mates have played up to 2 grade 1 friendly matches to prepare them for the tournament and they are still here rubbing body with bad luck because of money.......NFF only becomes independent when the Government takes side in their internal dispute but they run to Government like hungry alimajiris from time to time and it does not bother them that they are supposed to be independent without government interference.......some are even praying for the team to win the world cup when they know that it will be more easy for a carmel to pass through the eyes of a niddle than for that to happen....... Make a Yoruba man the President, the other two major ethnic groups will in no time begin to cry foul, marginalization and before you know it, there'll always be a way to sabotage the good efforts from the top one way or the other. The same goes for all other ethnic groups.

What's the solution?

Restructure and a return to the regional government. There's no ruling out further cries of marginalization and whatever within the regions (that's one of the burdens we need to bear all thanks to the British) but at least, this will be minimized and manageable as it will be micro compared to gargantuan macro hydra-headed monster of sabotage at the national level.
