A cave-in has occurred at Oba in Idemili South local government area of Anambra State, cutting off a section of the ever-busy Onitsha-Owerri expressway.

Only one lane of the road is currently being used by motorists and apart from cordoning off the affected area, no reconstruction has begun.

Major cracks were seen several metres along the road from the popular Oba junction and traffic had been directed to only one lane, thereby slowing down vehicular movement in the area.

Many buildings in the newly developed estates in the area are already being threatened by the slide. Some property owners were seen inspecting the extent of damage, yesterday, to decide what action to take about their newly completed houses.

Some people whose filling stations and houses are close to the site of the landslide said with the rainy season getting to its peak, there are fears that the menace might claim more land in the area.

An Onitsha-based businessman, Chief Francis Nnaka, who said he has a two-storey building close to the affected area called on the federal and state governments to intervene without further delay to save many buildings and land already acquired for development in the area.

Nnaka said: “Government cannot say that it did not know that gully erosion was developing on this spot for over one year. Last week, it was just about two feet to the road and If they had controlled it at that level, this massive slide would not have occurred. Now, hundreds of millions of naira will be spent to handle it.

“And if nothing is done immediately, both lanes of the expressway will be affected, which might lead to a complete closure of the Oba section of the road.

Avoid using that axis, safety first. I don't understand why that place is not cordoned off, those people standing there to take pictures are in danger nah.

The people know the solution to this problem but will never take and execute the solution measures.

Force people to move to the large swathe of unoccupied agrarian land all over the south East. The beautiful natural greenery and unoccupied area is so much that South East is almost green from Google satellite pictures!

You have a small land mass and small population yet most of this same small land mass is unoccupied, you then cluster in few places putting strain on that area because of massive deforestation and uncontrolled erection of buildings which later block flood ways during rains. That's a recipe for avoidable environmental disaster.

Igbo have a small population (from the official data released by NIN INEC, NCC, JAMB etc), Igbo people can just spread out more in the small yet oversized land mass so deforestation will be less and govt can incentivise those who do that.

This is man-made problem imposed on nature. Spread out to stop this kind of frequent environmental disaster in Igboland, your small land mass still outsize your population by several times so spreading out can be easily achieved. Protect your environment and the future of unborn children today.

This picture is Enugu Onitsha road and that spot was repaired by Obiano. As for Onitsha Owerri road, they are using one lane at the point where it developed huge fault, meanwhile, it's a federal road and far from being the worst in the country

Is soludo waiting till it takes the life of people before intervening on the road. Yes it's a federal road but urgent attention is needed. That road is very important to be left until when FG remember to handle the situation

Blame the individual too.

That road was well constructed with wide drainage systems during Obj administration
From Obosi down to Tarzan.
First, the drainage system was turned
to dumping sites. It got to a stage, a section of the roads was turned to dumping site.
