QUENCH NOT THE SPIRIT’S FIRE (2)

1st Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.
Vs 20 Despise not prophesyings.

There could be the misconception of thinking that Paul meant not to despise people's prophecies (when someone is prophesying to you). That's true, we shouldn’t, however that is not what he was saying here.

We would examine the pretext and post text to help our understanding.

The word 'quench' refers to an action we take to stop what is burning with you and not others. In other words, don't disallow the flow of the spirit through you.

Similar to what Paul said in 1st Corinthians 14:1, 39 and also to Timothy in 1st Timothy 4:14, 2nd Timothy 1:6, you are not to despise or neglect it, rather you are to desire it.

Prophecy is a gift. No gift works on its own without your active participation.

Back to 1st Thessalonians 5:19-20

The post-text is more precise

1st Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

The word 'prove' implies to display; to see or to show; demonstrate. In other words, we can say, “demonstrate all things”; all things referring to prophecy. Experiment all things that is prophecy.

The 'hold fast to that which is good' sums it all up. Prophecy is good, hold on to and never quench its fire.

So, 1st Thessalonians 5:19-20 isn't a text used to judge prophecy but rather using it and enjoying its benefits.

Prophecy edifies the church. Its fire must never be quenched. Hence, Paul's admonitions on never neglecting, despising, forbidding or quenching prophesyings.

Can there be an interpretation without speaking in tongues?

The essence of the interpretation is to give understanding to what was uttered by the ability of the spirit to the mind since no one understands tongues.

If tongues isn't spoken, then there is nothing to be interpreted.

Believers must learn to constantly give themselves to interpretation of tongues. The more you give yourself to it, the more skilful you become at it.

CONFESSION:
I speak with tongues in the name it is a gift from God and my right as a believer. I function in it every day, I do not despise it and am a blessing to other believers via interpretation of tongues.

PRACTICAL:
Have a gathering with one or more believers in which everyone puts to practise the speaking with and interpretation of tongues.
