The Chairman of Enugu South LGA, Nwabueze Okafor, has said that the Association
of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) will work for the autonomy of the third
tier of government.

Addressing newsmen on the sidelines of a tour of projects in his council, Okafor
said that local governments, being the closest tier to the people, did not need
to be tied to the aprons of any other tier of government.

He said that the leverage given to local government chairmen in Enugu State by
Gov. Sullivan Chime to access their allocations had shown that they could take
development to their people.

``What you have seen here is akin to what is happening all over the state.
People want to justify the money given to them.

``Local governments can work if they have their autonomy. We know the people and
they know us.

People come here to call my grandfather's name to get my attention.

``They tell me what they need and I attend to them. The people are far away from
the Federal and State Governments. They are detached from them,'' he said.

The chairman, who took newsmen through the network of roads connecting the nine
rural communities in the local government to the Enugu metropolis, said he
identified roads as his people's major need.

He said that once the major roads were completed before the Dec. 10 local
government elections in the state, he would shift attention to arterial roads to
connect agricultural communities to the city.

He said he was seeking re-election to serve his people more, saying that two
years was not enough to complete his plans for the people.
