People have been gathering at a square in central Niamey, the capital of Niger, to show their support for last week's military coup.

On the anniversary of the country's independence a coalition of civil society organisations called for people to turn up to denounce the sanctions imposed by the West African regional bloc, Ecowas. It says if President Mohamed Bazoum is not reinstated it could use force.

A sizeable crowd of mostly young men has shown up at independence square.

There are anti French slogans and a few Russian flags.

Despite this show of support for the men who overthrew the president, many in Niger are against the coup.

There is a view that it was a move by senior soldiers who were at risk of being replaced and losing their power.

But now as they seek to justify the power grab, anti-French sentiment is being whipped up.

It's a carbon copy of events in Mali and Burkina Faso where the coup leaders then strengthened ties with Russia.

Journalist Amaury Hauchard has been sharing stills and video from the demonstration in Niamey:

Oftentimes we wonder if any good thing can come out of Nazareth just like that young man asked in the Christian book, yes it can!

While many condemn military takeover tagging it the worst form of government, let's not forget what Thomas Sankara did in Burkina Faso. Never in the history of any under-developed country in Africa was such transformation ever recorded in less than five years.

Thomas swept the street of Ouagadougou so well that the host of heaven walked past and said"Here lived a man".While the concept of democracy is noteworthy,we must come to the realization that democracy isn't meant for every country be it small or big.

If Nigeriens are so pleased with this military government and supports this new General in town to be the Mel Gibson of this Patriot movie, then so be it.

Any African soldier(s) ‘in disguise of ecowas’
that will step foot into the land of Niger for war… in the interests of France and US … May the land of Niger consume them….

E don happen. When Democracy fails to live up to expectations as the government of the people and for the people, this is bound to happen.

Why do politicians take the people for granted, especially in Africa? Imagine Hope Uzodinma using the Nigerian Army to stop the NLC protest yesterday and still contesting for reelection as a Democratic Governor.

Tufiakwa.

Meaningless opinion. You failed to read the BBC article to understand the foolishness of Buhari's gift to corrupt politicians. The people of Niger are in support of the coup the same way as Nigerians who jubilated when Buhari was overthrown in a bloodless coup by Babangida in 1985 when Ubani was still playing with sand in the village.

Democracy is the government of the people and for the people, it doesn't say of politicians and for corrupt politicians.

They are paid for.
We have watched this film before wink Niger coup plotters are already gone.

No light, no internet, no flight, no food, no money and they are gasping at the straws. Nigeria is not your mate o. They will soon turn on themselves soon as the little funds left runs out. Their banks have been disconnected.

Maybe the ousted civilian government in Niger did not live up to expectation. Just maybe. Let us look at it from that angle too.

You cannot love the Nigeriens more than they love themselves.

i'm not in support of military taking over nigeria government, but if nigerians goes out on election day and vote for a particular Candidate, they should allow the candidate to rule and stop imposing another candidate who did not win majority of nigeria vote on nigerians.

The liberation of the African continent from the influence of the neocolonists and Western imperialists is a must. They keep on fostering autocratic dictators as leaders in order to continue to impoverish and subjugate the continent.

Senseless opinion! Buhari donated cars to Niger Republic yet none to you. Now the same Niger Republic decided to disposed off the useless government that have given legitimacy to your beloved Buhari who wrecked his foster country to developed his home country.

Remember, Buhari was a coup plotters too. However, another sophisticated coup plotters have ousted him and Tinubu can't bring him back.So this is not an IPOB matter.

Shame no dey catch you because supporting evil is pleasurable to you. Remember Buhari was also a weakling sotey Kastina people have to flee to the same Niger Republic to take refuge from the insecurity back home

Maybe politicians should start to respect people in their actions and policies. Politicians after 24 years in Nigeria have not been able to build 1(one) refinery while military built four in the space of fourteen years.
The only one being built by a private firm on their behalf has turned audio.
It is politicans that are now telling us there's a subsidy cabal that's more powerful than the govt. If they can't tame common subsidy cabal whatever that means, how can they solve any problem at all?
Let that sink into your obtuse head

But they decided to only show nd allow those ones that are supporting them with Russian propagandas

Some people think Niger is Nigeria where politicians exploit ethnic divisions to cling to power. If this was to be Nigeria, they would have called it "Igbo coup". Even as it's in Niger some Ronu miscreants are are still attaching Igbos to it forgetting that their anti igbo propaganda can't have any impact in Niger
