Mali: influencer sentenced to prison for denouncing the junta's "failure"

An influential Malian woman was sentenced on Wednesday to a year's imprisonment after speaking out against the ruling military and its "failure" to deal with insecurity and inflation, according to her lawyer.

She must also pay a fine of one million Francs cfa (1,500 euros). "We have appealed," Rokia Doumbia's lawyer, Kassoum Tapo, told AFP by telephone.

Under the colonial regime that has been in power in Mali since 2020, it is difficult for dissenting voices to make themselves heard without the risk of being worried. This Sahelian country is confronted with multifaceted violence, including jihadist attacks.

Rokia Doumbia, known in Mali for her commitment to fighting the high cost of living and with a strong following on social networks, was charged with "insulting the Head of State", "inciting revolt" and "disturbing public order through the use of information and communication technologies".

"In March, she launched a "live" message on TikTok addressed to the head of the junta, Colonel Assimi Goïta, before being imprisoned.

"This transition is a failure with 0% (of results). I wouldn't even give 1%, but 0%", she had declared, referring to the period of military government that was supposed to precede the return, announced for 2024, of civilians at the head of the country.

"No Malian lives in peace", she added, even though the authorities regularly claim to have regained the initiative against the jihadists. "Insecurity is gaining ground everywhere", she said.

A person close to Rokia Doumbia, who spoke on condition of anonymity like many of her interlocutors, said that she had been reported to the authorities by the Collectif pour la défense des militaires (CDM). Appeals from this organization, one of the junta's most offensive supporters, are often followed up.

Unlike the cyberbullies and criminal defamers being jailed or having pending criminal cases in Nigeria, she didn't insult, curse, cyberbully, use derogatory words and make criminal defamations yet she got jailed despite being civil. This is the downside to military rule and what we once experienced in Nigeria. You're jailed for being civil.

Those who never experienced Nigerian military rule and coups today feel they can destroy it with their recklessness and criminal actions of defamation online.

The alleged cyberbully claiming refugee in Ghana was in his diapers during the military era while his principal, Mr Obi, enjoyed cozy relationship with the Nigerian military dictator then, Gen Abacha.

The Federal Government of Nigeria must be strict in its crackdown on cyberbullies and criminal defamers. These criminals are not above the law and we can't have two different sets of justice system

The coup plotters in Niger have no other option again. This weekend is the deadline for them. Check my signature for free stuffs!

The black man cannot rule himself.

Wether Democracy, Autocracy, Cleptocracy, Pastorcracy or Whatever.

Intellectuallism and Liberalism is Africa's last hope.

But when even the Educated ones are blinded by Ethnicism and Religion, then you may be right to admit that Africa is hopeless.

Those of you wishing the military to take over Nigeria's leadership,I hope you all are seeing what's been happening over there in Mali?

No more freedom....

Tho I was little then when Abacha was in rulership, but one thing I still remembered was how people jubilated when the news of his death broke out....... Meaning that, people were actually fed up with him....

So let us be mindful of what we wish for🙏

Idiotic Obi-idiots who wish coup d'etat on Nigeria, out of spite for Tinubu, all they do all day is insult Tinubu. They are too foolish to realize that, with military junta, if you dare criticize the government, your head would be hung on a spike the next day, and nothing will happen.

This is the military rule the Obidient zombies were clamouring for in Nigeria and supporting in Niger?

They would have found themselves in jail and wish to have just 5mins of Buhari's or Tinubu's democratic rule.

Why linking obi and obidient to military takeover or anything not good?
obi took his case to the court to rectify and did not call for military takeover

If it was the military, you will be in jail already for this. Atleast, we had the privilege of abusing all our presidents and even rallying towards third forces
